Moment of A Force

1) Moment of a force is defined as the product of the force and the perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the pivot. 2) For a body in equilibrium, the sum of anti-clockwise moments must equal the sum of clockwise moments about the pivot. 3) The torque of a couple is defined as the product of one of the forces and the perpendicular distance between the two forces.

Moment of a Force Compiled By: Manzar Ali Khan

Moment – Turning Effect of a Force Anti-clockwise Moment = Clockwise Moment

Moment of a force is defined as “the product of the force and F1 x d 1 + F 2 x d 2 = F 3 x d 3 150 x 0.6 + 100 x 0.3 = T x 1.2
perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the pivot.”
120 = 1.2 T T = 100 N
Moment = Force x perpendicular distance from pivot

M=Fxd Unit = Nm

M = F x d = 50 x 0.45
= 22.5 Nm Clock wise F 1 x d 1 = F2 x d2 500 x 2 = 1000 x 1 1000 = 1000

Condition Of parallel Forces in equilibrium

Clockwise and Anti- Clockwise Moment

Moment arm = d = r Cos θ

= 0.5 cos 30= 0.43m

Moment = F x d = F r cos θ = 20 x 0.43 = 8.6 Nm Clockwise Moment. 1. Vector sum of Forces is equal to Zero. Or Resultant force
in any direction is Zero i.e. Ʃ X = 0 ƩY=0
Upward forces = downward Forces

F = W 0 + W1 + W2
Moment = F x d = F Sin θ x r = 20 Sin 30 x 0.5 = 5 Nm Anti- Clockwise
2. Algebric sum of Moments about any point as Pivot is Zero. Or
Principle of Moments: If a body is in equilibrium, Sum of anti- Resultant Moment in any Direction is equal to zero.
clockwise Moments is equal to Sum of Clockwise Moments about a Pivot.
Anti-clockwise Moment = Clockwise Moment

W1 x d 1 = W 0 x d 3 + W 2 x d 2

Torque of Couple of Forces

Couple of forces: Two forces form a couple, if they are equal in magnitude
but opposite in direction, and not along the same line.
Length of Beam is 1.2m. Weight of beam is 8.5N and T= 30N

(i) Calculate M

Taking Moments about A

30 Sin 50 x 1.2 = 8.5 x 0.6 + M x 1.2 M=19N

Torque of a Couple: The Torque of the couple is defined as the Product
(ii) Vertical force V at hinge. of one of the force and perpendicular distance between them.

Ʃ Y =0, V + 30 Sin 50 = 8.5 + 1 9 V =4.5 Torque = Force x Perpendicular distance between the forces.

(iii) Force H at hinge. T =Fxd

Ʃ X =0, H = 30 Cos 50= 19.2N Torque of Force

Q. A Uniform Plank of length 2m is resting on two trestles as shown in the

diagram. The plank has a mass of 50 kg. Another mass M= 30kg lies at a T = F1 x ( r1 + r2 )
distance 0.5m from the left. Calculate the values of forces F1 and F2.

T = F x (x2 – x1)
