Overview of Game (what kind of game, what genre, and what software will you
use):
Kind PC Game
Software G Develop 5
Mode Single-player
Characters (you can skip if you don’t have any, if you do have some, introduce
them here, who are they, what are their roles, etc.?)
Adult Bear The main character is an adult bear who has cubs to take
care of as they journey out for more resources. Their role
is to gather resources and keep the cub(s) alive. The bear
looks like a plain brown bear with no distinguishing
features. No gender identified.
Bear cubs Cubs of the adult bear that rely on the adult for food.
They serve as a constant responsibility for the adult bear,
but don’t have any agency of their own. They look
identical to the adult bears, just on a smaller scale. No
genders identified.
Hunters and The main antagonists are people that may hurt the bears
humans in various ways (shooting, driving, animal control, etc.).
Their role is to appear in the game as intentional and/or
accidental hazards. The humans are ever-present but do
not appear on screen; their presence is made aware via
symbols such as cars, trash-cans, bear-traps, animal
control vans. (they are not actual character sprites, we
only see the effects of their presence).
Story/events (what happens? – should be as brief as you can make it, as long as it
also makes sense):
You are a bear with bear cubs living in the forest. You have lots of natural resources around
you. You spend your day foraging berries and fishing for salmon to eat, drinking fresh river
water, and you sleep in a bear cave.
Soon, you realize your resources are disappearing. The forest is being cut down by nearby
humans, the river is contaminated by hazardous material spills and pollution, and your bear
cave is too far from other sources of food and water to continue sleeping in every night.
You take your bear cubs through the forest searching for places with more resources. Along
the way, you encounter: highways that cut through the forest and must be crossed safely;
trash-cans to dig through for food; forest fires; contaminated water sources; caves that aren’t
safe to sleep in for very long because they’ve become a well-known Instagram selfie spot;
humans calling animal control if they spot you or your cubs.
Eventually you must make a choice: stay near the human cities, or continue travelling away
from human civilization and try to make a home in unfamiliar territory. Your choice will
unlock new/different challenges.
The game ends when you reach the final level and you have found a safe haven with enough
resources and shelter to take care of you and your cubs.
Steam Synopsis (what would the synopsis for this game on Steam be?):
You are an adult bear living life happily with its family of bear cubs. Your habitat has everything you
need to survive: food, water, and shelter; life is great in the Pacific Northwest! Suddenly, the sound of
chainsaws fills the air and you realize your home isn’t safe anymore. Now it’s up to you to preserve
yourself and your cubs by traversing a diverse environment as you search for resources, while
avoiding natural and man-made hazards along the way. Natural food sources are dwindling, fresh
water is scarce, and shelter is evasive. Will you find a safe haven?
Game mechanics/rules (how do you win/lose? What happens/what are the rules?
What is the goal of the game?):
How do you win? Take your bear character and move it through the
environment using forwards motions, backwards
motions and jumping.
Collect resources as you go and complete each level
without your health reaching zero.
Get to the end of the final map without losing all your
lives.
How do you lose? If your health or your cubs health reaches zero in any
level, you lose a life. If all of your lives are lost before
reaching the end of the game, then it is over. You can
also lose lives by succumbing to hazards that appear
around you, both natural and man made.
What happens/what are the You need to keep your stat bar full (this represents your
rules? essential needs like food, water, and sleep). You add to
the stat bar by finding and consuming food/water and by
getting enough sleep in one stretch (being interrupted
during your sleep means it’s not a safe enough space).
Starting in level two, you also have to care for your cubs.
You can see your cubs overall well-being which is
represented by either a smiling face, a neutral face, or a
sad face. Hazards can be avoided by quickly jumping over
the obstacle (for example, a felled tree or a pit), leaving
an unsafe area quickly (for example, crossing a highway
that cuts through the area or not staying in an area with
smoke b/c a forest fire may be burning nearby), or hiding
from humans (for example, if you see a trash-can you
can assume that humans may be nearby and you
shouldn’t linger in that area or risk being seen and
having animal control called on you).
Potential levels: 1 - Deep forest area (learn how to move your character
and how to find/consume resources). Cubs are present
but not involved in gameplay yet. Ends with the
beginning of danger (chainsaw noises). Essentially the
tutorial level.
2 - Deep forest area. Hazards begin to appear (natural:
fallen trees, less food, contaminated water, other
predators, and man-made: bear traps, human presence).
Cubs are in gameplay now (you must keep them alive
and find safety/more resources).
3 - Edge of forest, transition to suburbs. More man-made
hazards and higher risk of being seen by humans.
4 - Suburbs. Very risky, hard to avoid being seen by
humans, lots of scrounging through trash-cans for food.
5- Final level. The most difficult obstacle appears as a
highway to cross. You can see more deep forest on the
other side of the highway but must risk getting across it
first. Possibly a wooden sign appears to let you know
that just beyond this obstacle is a safer place for bears.
6 - End Screen (“you have reached your safe haven”).
Potential message to the player about the real situation
that local bears are in (being pushed out of their
habitats etc.?
What is the goal of the game? Collect resources to ensure survival; Adapt & avoid
hazards in the environment, either natural or man-made.
