Rip Project

The document compares two approaches to accent modification for non-native English speakers of Korean background: the segmental approach and contrastive approach. It finds that while there was no significant difference between the approaches for consonant production, the contrastive approach was more successful for vowel productions. A second study observed two Japanese women learning English pronunciation processes and found they exhibited common processes like vowelization and final consonant devoicing despite varying skill levels. Both maintained elements of articulatory and contrastive training but also considered incorporating a cycles approach or phonological process framework with caution.

INTO

Treatment and Framework

Olivia Withrow
Effectiveness of Two Different Approaches to Accent
Modification Services for Non-Native English Speakers of
Korean Background

◦ Purpose: to compare the segmental approach to the contrastive

approach
◦ Targets: labio-dental fricatives, liquids, and front vowels
◦ Segmental Approach: an instructional strategy which focuses on
the development and practice of the motor skills associated with
single phoneme production. (basically articulation drills)
◦ Contrastive approach: focused on contrastive production of
phonemes using minimal pair to break down phoneme collapse
(also used multiple pair strategy)
Effectiveness of Two Different Approaches to Accent Modification Services for
Non-Native English Speakers of Korean Background Continued

Interesting results
◦ No significant difference between the segmental approach and the contrastive
approach when used for consonant production accuracy
◦ Contrastive approach was more successful in facilitating vowel productions
◦ Both methods were used throughout the semester with our INTO students weekly
◦ Study confirms that these methods have shown success in accent modification
Exploring a Phonological Process Approach to Adult
Pronunciation Training

◦ Purpose: to demonstrate how phonological process analysis, can be

used to characterize adult target language phonological learning
◦ Same phonological processes of monolingual children
◦ Two Japanese women were observed
◦ Participant 1: Advanced-High Skill Level
◦ Participant 2: Intermediate- Low Skill Level
Exploring a Phonological Process Approach to Adult Pronunciation Training

◦ Interesting Results
◦ Commonly produced vowelization, final consonant devoicing, and cluster
reduction despite varying levels
◦ Two treatment approaches
◦ Articulatory Approach
◦ Cycles Approach
Based upon my accumulated knowledge of evidence-based
practice, would I modify any aspect of my approach with
this particular client?

◦ Maintain both the segmental approach (articulatory) and

contrastive approach
◦ Possibly consider a cycles approach, with caution6
◦ Possibly consider the phonological process framework, but with
caution
