Peri-Operative Care: Adult, Fluid Balance Pack
Information
Peri-operative Care
The facts
Drinking good amounts of fluid essentially can contribute towards you staying fit and
healthy. However, when we become ill it can become difficult to maintain a healthy fluid
intake. A recommended fluid intake is on average two litres per day, although each
individual is different.
Some people may even be on fluid restrictions; this is often due to excess fluid in the
body.

Information
If you drink too little there is a risk that you may become dehydrated. Signs of
dehydration include:
You are more at risk of becoming dehydrated if you do not drink sufficiently, are
experiencing diarrhoea or vomiting and have excessive sweating. Some medications
also have side effects that can cause dehydration.
On the fluid balance chart, there is an oral input column. Here you can write down
the volume you drank next to the time you drank it (for cup volume sizes, please
see the back page).
Your nursing team will also assist with your fluid balance chart. They will document the
fluid input that you haven’t taken orally, document your fluid output, and provide a fluid
balance total every six hours at minimum.
The fluid charts are available from the nurse on the ward: one for each day.
