• Israel is a country in the Middle East, on the Southeastern shore of
Mediterranean Sea and the Northern shore of Red Sea.
• Israel's diverse culture origins from the diversity of its population: Jews
from diaspora communities around the world have brought their cultural
and religious traditions back with them, creating a melting pot of Jewish
customs and beliefs.
• Jerusalem, Israel's capital, has stood at the center of the Jewish people’s
national and spiritual life since King David made it the capital of his
kingdom some 3000 years ago.
• The official languages of the country are Hebrew and Arabic, but in the
country’s streets many other languages can be heard.

• Music in Israel is an important part of national identity. It is a combination of
Jewish and non-Jewish music traditions that have come together over the
past century to create a distinctive musical culture.
• When the days of the pioneers began, Hebrew songs and public sing-alongs
(Shira be Tsibur) were a common pastime of the early settlers and they
became a defining force for their identity.
• Jewish immigrants from Europe , Asia, Middle East, and elsewhere brought
with them their musical traditions, blending and molding them into a new
Israeli sound.
• Israeli’s musicians have made significant contributions to classical, jazz, pop,
pop rock, and other international music genres that defined their national spirit
and stylistic elements.

Musical Background of Israel
• Israel’s music is heavily influenced by its neighboring countries. It combines
more their ethnic, western, and eastern music as well as Jewish and non-
Jewish music traditions. Israel also has refined a rich tradition of classical
European music.
• Israel music is composed of two major forces: Zionist movement which
encouraged the creation and dissemination of Israeli folk music; and Political
struggle against fascism which led many European-born musicians to flee to
the Holy Land.
• Zionist musicians composed hundreds of short simple folk songs for
dissemination to other Israelites which show how music is a very essential
part of national identity in Israel.

The goblet drum is a single head


membranophone with a goblet shaped body used

The goblet drum may be played while held under
one arm (usually the non-dominant arm) or by
placing it sideways upon the lap (with the head
towards the player's knees) while seated.
Some drums are also made with strap mounts so
the drum may be slung over the shoulder, to
facilitate playing while standing or dancing

Toft (Bendir)
The term Bendir means in Turkish language a
big hand frame drum, which is known as Duff
in Arabic language.
The drum is played kept vertical by inserting
the thumb of the left hand in a special holes in
the frame.

pear-shaped stringed instrument
with 11 or 13 strings grouped in 5 or
