Barangay Mapang is one of

the rural barangays of the

municipality of Bongabong.
It has a total land area of
910 square meters. It is
bounded by barangay For-
mon from the West, Baran-
gay Hagupit from the South,
and Barangay Morente from
the East. The Barangay has
two (2) sitios namely: Sitio
Centro and Sitio Mascong.
Barangay Mapang was formerly a sitio named “Pulingon”. The name Mapang was
derived from the endearment of the first couple who lived in the place. Felix Formon used
to call his wife, “Ma” and his wife called him, “Pang”. Since then, the Sitio was called
“Mapang” until today to commemorate the first persons who lived in the barangay. In
1950, a couple named Timoteo and Soyha Mameng lived in Mapang. It was year 1959
when Dr. Rodreguez appointed Temoteo Mameng as the lieutenant of Barangay Mapang.

mangyan word which means “big wave”). This river passes through different barangays
and one of them is Barangay Mapang. Way back in early 80s, the public vehicles which
were traveling to the south of Oriental Mindoro, coming from Calapan City used to have
their routes thru crossing the river in Barangay Mapang, thus it was being called “Tawiran
Sa Mapang.”

Covid-19 pandemic has gone worldwide and made people stay in their homes. The
locals just have to explore or enjoy in their own place as this pandemic prohibits people to
hop in from one place to another to avoid hosting the virus and pass it to other people.

This was the time that the locals of Mapang started to enjoy their own unappreci-
ated beauty of Tawiran sa Mapang. In just short period of time, the beauty of Tawiran sa
Mapang which has been overlooked by many, became famous all over Bongabong and
nearby towns. The attraction became an instant hit to many as it became viral in social
media.
The presence of flora and fauna in
Tawiran sa Mapang. They also have a lot
of variety of flowers and one of which is a
big flower called “Pongapong.”
A striking aroid with a flower spike
crowned with a bulbous maroon knob and
encircled by a fleshy maroon and green-
blotched bract. The solitary leaf, which
emerges after the flowering parts, resem-
bles a small tree.
Common in most or all, provinces of
Luzon and in Mindor, in thickets and sec-
ondary forests, along roads, trails, etc. at
low medium altitudes in settled areas.
They are traditionally used in the
treatment of a wide rangeof conditions
including parasitic worms, inflammation
coughs, flatulence, constipation, anaemia,
hemorrhoids and fatigue.

There are different kinds of
kubo sheds, alongside the river that
you can rent for your picnic-by-the-
river. There are more than twenty
(20) kubo sheds which were made
by residents of the barangay. There
are also public restrooms which
can be used for changing clothes.

The barangay is still on the

process of adding more amenities
such as places for photos or devel-
oping instagrammable areas that
can also attract more local and as
well as foreign tourists.

Mapang you can rent once you visit the place and price ranges
from P200.00 to P300.00, with more than ten (10) person ca-
pacity for each.
Mapang also has another beautiful attraction which is the Bapor Bapor Waterfalls.
Its height is about 30 ft. This place can be reached from 10-minute walk from the high-
way. This just needs a development so the water that lands in a plunge pool, which is a
deep pool of water found beneath waterfalls will be cleaner, deeper and people can swim
as well. The trail that leads you to this falls should be developed as well at there is a steep
slope that you have to pass in order for you to reach this attraction.
The view outside after a 10-min-
ute journey inside the cave, you’ll be
welcomed with strong current of water,
with a majestic view of mountains of
Bongabong.

Also there is a cave in Mapang which looks like a tunnel

as once you entered it, you will find yourself in front of the river at
the ending exit of this cave. This cave is not that big, so small and
medium people can fit in it except to bigger sizes. It is cold inside
this cave and better to ask for a guide if you are planning to go
inside of it.
