Rizal received his early education in Calamba and Binan, Philippines. He demonstrated academic excellence and was sent by his family to further his studies in Manila. There, he attended Ateneo Municipal and the University of Santo Tomas, earning degrees in philosophy and surveying. In 1882, he left for Spain where he studied medicine and philosophy at the University of Madrid. He received his medical degree in 1884 and a degree in philosophy in 1887. Rizal continued his studies in Germany, attending lectures at the University of Heidelberg and giving an address in Berlin on the Tagalog language.

Education in Calamba
- In the age of 3 Rizal learned the alphabet and the prayers. His family teached him some
skills and aside from it he has also a private tutor to further enhance his skills and
lessons.
Education in Binian
- Rizal was sent to a private school
- In the year 1869 his brother Paciano brought him to the school of maestro Justiano
Aquino Cruz.
Education in Manila
- Rizal studied in Colegio de San Juan de lattan.
- In June 1872 Don Francisco sent him to enroll in Ateneo Municipal.
- On March 231877, he received the Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating as one of the
nine students in his class declared ‘sobresaliente’ or outstanding.
- In 1887,Rizal enrolled in the University of Santo Tomas, taking the course on Philosophy
in Letter. At the same time, he took in Ateneo a land surveyor and assessor's degree
(expert surveyor), a vocational course. At the same year he finished his surveyor's
training.
- In 1878,passed the licensing exam.
- In 1882, he stopped attending classes at UST.
Education in Europe
- On May 3, 1882, he left for Spain and enrolled in Medicine and Philosophy and Letters
at the Universidad Central de Madrid on November 3.
- November 1884, Rizal was
- involved in the chaotic student demonstrations by the Central University students in
which many were wounded, hit by cane, arrested, and imprisoned.
- In June of 1884, Rizal received the degree of Licentiate in Medicine at the age of 23.
- Exactly on his 24th birthday, the Madrid university awarded him the degree of Licentiate
in Philosophy and Letters with the grade of excellent.
- From November 1885 to February 1886, he worked as an assistant to Dr. Louis de
Wecker.
- In February 3, 1886, Rizal attended the lectures of Dr. Otto Becker and Prof. Wilhelm
Kuehne at the University of Heidelberg.
- In April 1887, he was invited to deliver an address in German
- before the ‘Ethnographic Society’ of Berlin on the orthography and structure of the
Tagalog language.
