Organisation (WHO)
Facing Future International Pandemics:
What we learned from COVID-19?
By Vinodini Priya.S | chinadaily | Dated: 25th July 2021.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) a constant echo that revolves around the globe with its impacts,
disrupting the world’s socio-economy, health, peace, and many more. Starting its phase from
the end of 2019, it’s been evolving year by year.

“Whether the COVID-19 vaccines made mandatory

is justifiable or not?”
This controversy hasn’t started from this pandemic period, its historic print dates back to
1796-1798, where Edward Jenner, the founder of vaccinology, developed small pox vaccine,
which was considered as a prodigious solution to the disease killing millions worldwide.
Eventhen, UK made it mandatory by Vaccination Act, 1853. Later in 1898, due to anti-
vaccination movement or Anti-Vaxx, objections based on religious or health aspects, led the
legislation to amend the law, to allow for ‘conscientious objection’ to receive a vaccine.
Right now there is a clash between Greek police & protestors against COVID-19 vaccines, as
on 22nd July 2021, when it was made mandatory for healthcare workers & nursing home
staffs along with teachers on the next go.

More protests happened in many countries like France, and Paris for the same issue, to which
FRA have made a bulletin on the aspect of Vaccine rollout & equality of Access in the EU1.

WHO in 2019 declared that, “Vaccine hesitancy” - one of the 10 threats to global health2. All
these protests are due to fear and non-availability of vaccines that are approved by their own
countries. When all these are resolved, then the question of vaccination to be mandatory
won’t arise.
