Mud Flooring

Mud flooring is commonly used in villages as it is cheap, hard, and easy to construct and maintain. It remains warm in winter and cool in summer, making it suitable for extreme climates. When the soil is unsuitable, stabilizers like cement, straw, or cow dung can be added to increase strength and reduce shrinkage. To construct a mud floor, materials like sand, clay, manure and straw are mixed and spread in a 150mm thick layer, then flattened. Maintaining with weekly cement-cow dung coats helps preserve the floor.

* Mud flooring is commonly constructed in villages.

* Advantages:
1.It is cheap
2.It is hard
3.It is fairly impervious
4.It is easy in construction
5.It is easy to maintain
6.It remains warm in winter and cold in summer and
hence it is most suitable for places where the
temperature is extreme during these seasons.
* Disadvantages:
1.It is only well suited for small towns and villages.
* When the available soil is not suitable enough
for construction then soil can be used by
manipulating its composition by adding suitable
stabilizers.
* Stabilizers enhances the property of the soil by
- increasing the tensile and shear strength
- reduce shrinkage.
* Cement – modern contemporary stabilizer.
* Indigenous stabilizer – straw , plant juices ,
molasses , cow dung , animal urine , oil , tanic
acid
• Materials required for mud flooring –
- sifted sand
- clay
- cow manure
- chopped and sifted straw
• Wet the base floor with water
• Spread out the mix
• Ram well so as to get consolidated thickness
of 150mm
• Water is not added during the process of
ramming
• Flatten the floor surface with trowel
• To maintain the mud floor in good condition, a
thin coat of cement-cow dung is added once
or twice a week in proportion of 1:2 ratio
