Discussion 1 - OB Criticism
Discussion 1 - OB Criticism
when one would rarely hear such a criticism of a course in physics or statistics? Do you
think this criticism of OB is fair?
SOLUTION
OB is built on contributions from a number of behavioural disciplines, including
psychology, sociology, social psychology, and anthropology. It goes beyond “common
sense.”
Physics and statistics are pure science and their rules can be proved by calculations or lab
tests. On the other hand, OB is the study of human behaviour, values, and beliefs,
attitudes etc. and it is not a pure science but the study of human behaviour.
The OB deals with various theories of human behavior and is built on contributions from
a number of behavioural disciplines including psychology, sociology, social psychology,
and anthropology. OB is based on scientific evidence and goes beyond “common sense.”
It is the systematic study and application of knowledge about how individuals and groups
act within the organizations where they work.
Evidence-based management (EBM) complements systematic study and bases
managerial decisions on the best available scientific evidence.
To this end, this criticism is not fair, as OB is founded on a solid base of research. People
who develop theories about organizational behavior will approach problems in a much
more sophisticated fashion and not fall victim to superficial detail.

Taraneh,
I agree with you, according to Langton et al.(2019) EBM complements the intuition.
These "gut feelings" that were developed and taught through common sense lessons.
It should be clear , even though we have been "reading " people , as the authors say , for
all our life, that the human behaviour cannot be predicted under different situations.
Because of this , it is necessary the scientific support provided by OB and the other fields
correlated as Psychology, sociology, anthropology.

Dear Hendrik,
I get your point. You are right, OB is categorized under social science. In fact, I meant
that fields such as natural science, physics, and statistics are "pure" science and focus on
the physical world, whereas areas like OB (social science as large) focus on the
interactions of humans and society.
