IES VE Parametric Tool Guide

This document provides a 3-step workflow for using IES VE's parametric modeling tools: 1. Define models in VE and set them up for simulation but add them to a queue without running. 2. Use the standalone Elements app to define parameter variation rules for simulations. 3. Use the standalone Parametric app to import parameter rules, select variables to combine, run simulations, and view results. This allows efficiently running multiple parametric simulations without needing VE open.

STEP 1 - setup
Defining model in the VE using Building Template Manager as you typically
would.

After running SunCast for each model (orientations and WWR was set up in
different files), the Apache Simulation can be set up, specifying name,
simulation and output options as usual. Instead of simulating, the model is
added to queue, which creates a new file of .apr format in the VE folder of the
model. After this, save & exit. No further action is required in VE.

The .apr files for each model can be found in the VE model folder >
parametric_batch > modelname.apr.

STEP 2 – elements
In the next step, the rules for changing parameters are defined using the
standalone “elements” tool included in the VE download. This tool can be found
in your VE installation folder, using a path such as:
C:\Program Files (x86)\IES\VE 2021\apps\elements

After opening elements, you can select the .apr file previously defined in VE.

Now, you can choose “rules” defining parameter changes for each simulation,
setting variations in certain values (scale or absolute).

Rules & variables tabs

After setting up the rules, you can switch to the “variables” tab to select
variables for output. It is possible to choose between the minimum, maximum
and total values of each variable.
It is possible to modify the following variables:

STEP 3 – parametric
The parametric tool can be found in the same location (VE apps folder) as
elements. As before, you choose the relevant .apr file. Then import the
parameters/variables set in elements via file > import variables and parameters.
The simulations to run should appear in the input window.

output log

To combine different variables, there is an option in the dropdown Grouping

menu which allows you to select variables to link.

To select the simulation to combine with others, select “Combine” and then
“link” for every simulation to be combined with the former.
For example, we can link DHW efficiency to solar area. This will result in a set
of 7 solar area simulations + 5x7 solar area and DHW efficiency combination
simulations.

Finally, the simulations can be run from this app by clicking on the green arrow.
Results and output log will show then, along with a progress bar at the bottom
of the window.

The VE can be used independently in the meantime.
