Name of different types of chickens, duck, goose, pigeon and turkey breeds
Brief classification of chickens on different basis

Breeds of Chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus)

In ancient time all poultry birds lived in forest. India and middle area of east Asia is considered
as the original homeland of chicken. It is thought that, modern chicken originated from red
jungle chicken of that time.

Classification According to Origin

Over 200 different breeds and varieties of chickens produced all over the world, according to
origin all the chickens are of four types.

 Asiatic: Brahma, Langshan, Cochin, Asil etc.

 English: Australorp, Cornish, Dorking, Orpington etc.

 Mediterranean: Leghorn, Minorca, Ancona, Fayoumi etc.

 American: Road Island Red (RIR), New Hampshire, Plymouth Rock etc.

Classification On the Basis of Production

On the basis of production chicken are of three types.

1. Layer

Layer is for egg production. Some popular layer breeds are Leghorn, Minorca, Ancona,
Fayoumi, Isa Brown, Babycock, Star Cross, Lohman etc.

2. Broiler

Broiler chickens are only for meat production. Plymouth rock, Cornish, Sussex, Dorking,
Cochin, Brahma, Asil, Star Brow, Hi-line etc. are popular broiler breeds.

3. Egg and Meat

This types of breed are used for the purpose of both egg and meat production. Rhode Island Red,
New Hampshire, Plymouth Rock etc. are popular breeds for both meat and egg production.

Breeds of Duck (Anas domesticus)

Like most other domestic poultry species, the ducks have many breeds. And most of the duck
breeds are derived from the wild Mallard ducks.

On the basis of purpose ducks may be classified into four classes-

1. Meat Type- Pekin, Aylesbury, Muscovy, Rouen, Cayuga.


2. Egg Type- Indian Runner, Khaki Campbell
3. Meat and Egg Type- Sylhet Mete, Nageswari
4. Ornamental Type- Gray and White Gall, Crested White, Black East India, Mandarin
Wood.

Breeds of Pigeon

There are about three hundred pigeon breeds available around the world. Pigeon breeds are of
two types which are described below.

1. Meat Productive Breeds: White king, Homer, Texona, Silver king, Gola, Lokha, etc. are
meat productive pigeons.
2. Entertaining: Jalali, Moyurponkhi, Shirazi, Lohore, Fantail, Jacobin, Frillback, Modena,
Trumpeter, Trubit, Mukhi, Giribaz, Templar, Lotal etc. are most popular entertaining
pigeons.

Breeds of Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo)

Varieties are often confused with breeds. Only eight breeds of turkey are recognized by the APA
in its breed standard, the American Standard of Perfection. These are:

Incubation Period: 28 days

Mass: Male: 5 – 11 kg (Adult),

Female: 2.5 – 5.4 kg (Adult)

Maximum weight- 39 kg

Breeds of Quail (Coturnix coturnix)

At present there are more than 100 breeds of quails are available, which are very suitable for
profitable quail farming business. According to their production, quail breeds are of two types
such as broilers and layers.

 Japanese
 Tuxedo
 Pharaoh
 British Range
 English White
 Manchurian Golden
Broiler Quail Breeds
 Bobwhite (American)
 White Breasted (Indian)

Clutch size: 8-12

Incubation Period: 18 days

Weight: 70g - 140g

Breeds of Goose (Anser anser domesticus)

There are many goose breeds available throughout the world. Some of these breeds are good for
meat production, some are good for producing eggs. Goose meat is popular throughout the
world, particularly popular in Germanic languages countries around Christmas.

2. American Buff 7. Pilgrim

3. Chinese 8. Roman

4. Cotton Patch 9. Scania

5. Danish 10. Sebastopol

Clutch Size: 5-6

Incubation Period: 28 days

Mass: 3-10 kg

Guinea Fowl, at a glance

Clutch Size: 4-12

Yearly egg: 55-100

Egg weight: 37-40 gm

Incubation Period: 26-28 days

Mass: 1.3 kg
