Globalism and informationalism have one thing in common, which is the concept
of interconnectedness of people, government and state beyond its borders into the
world. They are the indicators of interconnectedness in terms of global trades and
information from the different areas around the world. Globalism is the more general
explanation or concept of the changes brought by globalization, on the other hand,
informationalism is a specific part of globalism which is interconnected in terms of
information. Globalism particularly talks about or emphasizes the interaction of
individuals and the different states in a borderless manner. It is more likely being
made as it connotes oneness of policies that should be made and applied as the

global policies that would rule across borders. Informationalism is a newer concept
co
which particularly tackles the internet which is the specific medium or platform that

interconnect every nationality and state with just an information. It focuses more on

the power of information through social media, technology and computers to connect

people, nations and states. It introduces and promotes new interactual landscapes

that bridges the physical gaps of every nation and state. It connects us without
physical distance barriers with the introduction of virtual information where it created
a mindset that flow of information is limitless even if we are apart from each other
o
and we could connect easily and conveniently. Through the help of different

technologies just like the invention of cellular phones, the internet and satellites that
are rampant in today’s time, the information flows infinitely across territory. The
popularity now of online platforms just like social media and online messaging is the
great tool of informationalism.

Moreover, the barriers to our collective learning in the age of information would
be the following: (1) slow connection, (2) expensive internet price, (3) filtered
information and (4) proliferation of fake news. First, slow connection is one of the
is
main barriers to collective learning as the information loads slower which cut the
Th
time to learn something. The slow connection we are experiencing here in the
Philippines couldn’t keep up or compete with other countries which greatly affect our
collective learning. Second, expensive internet prices, particularly in a third world
sh
country not every individual could afford an internet connection which hinders their
collective learning. Third, filtered information, not every information is available on
the internet especially if the government forbids to do so. Lastly, proliferation of fake
news, it also barriers to our collective learnings as the information we acquire are not
valid and could create confusion.

Furthermore, the more we progress into the future the more the internet is
capable of connecting us in real time. The internet may help eliminate physical
barriers with more and more people connected, but it is only at that point that it can
help, when it can connect people. So, I think that geopolitical boundaries and
physical boundaries are still relevant in the future given the nature of information and
information revolution as not all the concepts of globalization are being adapted by
every nation. Geopolitical boundaries and physical boundaries are still important in
the modern age as they are still the determinant of the size of a borderless society.
