CSS Grade10 Q3 LAS4

This document is a learning activity sheet for a computer systems servicing class that discusses peer-to-peer network access. It begins by explaining that in a peer-to-peer network, all computers connected are equal and act as both clients and servers simultaneously. Peer-to-peer networks can be advantageous for small networks with 10 or fewer users as they allow sharing of resources without a costly server. The document then provides activities for students to identify advantages of peer-to-peer versus client-server networks, differentiate their characteristics, and reflect on how peer-to-peer networks could benefit learning.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN COMPUTER SYSTEMS SERVICING NCII

Quarter 3: Week 4, Worksheet No. 1

PEER-TO-PEER (P2P) NETWORK ACCESS

Name of Student:
Learning Area-Grade Level: TLE 10-CSS____________________________________
Date:

When you set up a windows peer-to-peer network (also referred to as a workgroup

network), it is important to understand that all computers on the network are equal. All the
peer-to-peer computers, also known as nodes, simultaneously act as both clients and
servers.

This can be an advantage for small networks that have ten (10) or fewer users. It
allows a small network to share resources without the need of a costly server. In addition,
it enables a small company to have a network setup without hiring an internal IT
department.

All devices, regardless of the operating system once connected by a centralized

connection like a router or hub forms peer-to-peer networks.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES: (TLE_IACSS9-12SUCS-IIIa-e-3)

LEARNER’S REFERENCE IN PEER-TO-PEER NETWORK ACCESS

Peer-to-Peer Network

Peer to peer network is a distributed application architecture that partitions tasks or

workloads between peers. Client server network is a distributed application structure based
on resource or service providers called servers and service requesters called clients. This
constitutes the difference between peer to peer and client server network. Computer networks
allowed sharing of resources and information. Allowed to receive or send data to/from at least
one process residing in a remote device. A collection of computers and other hardware
interconnected by communication channels. Characterized by medium used of transport the
data.
Computer-communication networks allow the sharing of specialized computer
resources such as data bases, programs, and hardware. Such a network consists of both the
computer resources and a communications system interconnecting them and allowing their
full utilization to be achieved. In addition, a resource-sharing network provides the means
whereby increased cooperation and interaction can be achieved between individuals.

Advantages
▪ No need for a network operating system.
▪ Does not need an expensive server because
individual workstations are used to access the files.
▪ No need for specialist staff such as network
technicians because each user sets their own
permissions as to which files they are willing to share.
▪ Much easier to set up than a client-server network –
does not need specialist knowledge.
▪ If one computer fails it will not disrupt any other part
of the network. It just means that those files aren't Source: https://networkencyclopedia.com/peer-to-
available to other users at that time. peer-network-p2p/

Disadvantages
▪ Because each computer might be being accessed by others it can slow down the
performance for the user.
▪ Files and folders cannot be centrally backed up.
▪ Files and resources are not centrally organized into a specific ‘shared’ area.
▪ Ensuring that viruses are not introduced to the network is the responsibility of each
individual user.
▪ There is little or no security besides the permission.

Client-Server Network
With a client server network the files will not be stored on the hard drive of each
workstation. Instead they will be stored on a specialized computer called a server. A server is
designed to efficiently provide data to a remote client.

If you are using a client server network, then you will have a user account and you
will have to log on with a user name and password .

Advantages
▪ All files are stored in a central location.
▪ Network peripherals are controlled centrally.
▪ Backups and network security is controlled centrally.
▪ Users can access shared data which is centrally controlled.

Disadvantages
▪ A specialist network operating system is needed.
▪ The server is expensive to purchase.

▪ If any part of the network fails a lot of disruption can occur.
