KADALAS CAFE (Renovated) : Architect-Area Built Year Location

The document describes renovations to Kadalas Cafe in Kozhikode, Kerala, India. The renovation involved altering the roof heights of the existing 300 sqm, 3-level building to create more volume without changing the area or structure. This created a unique space for experience dining with views of the sea. The exterior and interior feature minimal detailing and ornamentation to keep the focus on the sea views. Furnishings use traditional teak wood to accentuate simple lines and not obstruct views. Each level provides different views, with the base featuring a curved jali oriented to the beach, and the top housing a lounge with an unobstructed view.

The design involved reforming this building
with no changes in the existing area or
structural elements but in volume by altering
the roof heights.

A unique space for ‘experience dining’.

This was to be done using the three

available levels in an existing building
The limited detail and
ornamentation in the exterior, as
well as interior, has been a
conscious decision so that the sea,
with its changing colors, remains
the major focus of the design.

The façade is enveloped in corrugated cement sheets

and rest of the exterior reflects similar hues with
exposed cement and glass finishes.
Color-shades of blue and yellow along with plain cement finish
the flooring.
Finishes and accessories- being antique or obtained thus
reconnecting the building with the past.
The choice of furniture- is mostly traditional - designed with a
minimalistic approach.Old teak wood panels make up for seat
and table tops, used without polishing off their patina.
They accentuate on simple lines in order to not obstruct the
outside view.
