Chapter 1 Forum Q1 - Basalio

Rizal's novels exposed the abuses and corruption of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. However, learning patriotism from his novels can be complicated because they detail oppressive actions by colonizers and friars that some saw as attacks on the Catholic Church. Additionally, some viewed the novels as promoting revolution rather than just patriotism. While Rizal used his writing to peacefully fight for Filipino rights and freedom, others believed the novels were dangerous or seditious due to their anti-colonial and anti-clerical messages.

CHAPTER 1, FORUM Q#1

Why is the learning of Patriotism from these novels a complicated process? What is the
danger inherent in reading Rizal’s novel?

I. OPENING STATEMENT
One of the national heroes in Philippines who resiliently fought for freedom of the country from
the merciless hands of colonizers is Dr. Jose P. Rizal. He is absolutely known for all of his literatures
like novels which entitled Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. These famous novels were
passionately and earnestly written by Dr. Rizal in order to wake up the spirit of awareness and
resiliency of his fellow countrymen. Furthermore, he gave his ample time to make more literary pieces
in order to persuade his fellowmen to fight for their rights, to protect and secure their freedom, and to
love their own country. Rizal’s novels spread out everywhere and many people had been touched as
they read his pieces. However, some of them considered that it is dangerous to read his novels and it
is a complicated process to learn about patriotism which he wanted to express with. It is indeed that
Rizal’s novels talked about the oppression and the inequalities brought by the Spaniards when they
colonized and dominated the country. In fact, such themes that being incorporated in his pieces were
seemed to be an attack to the Catholic Church due to the persecution of some friars to the Filipinos at
that time. Moreover, there were people who believed that his novels were actually seditious. These
abovementioned points are some among the reasons why reading Rizal’s novels could be dangerous
and also because, for others, these were ways of revolting and not to comprehensively focus on
patriotism.

IIa. 1ST RRL

Based on the study of Albela and Hila (2020), Rizal’s novels were considered as a form of
revelation about many aspects and points of reflection in the Philippine society. They also concluded
that Rizal effectively portrayed in his novels the allegorical phasing of the individuals, places, and
happenings dignified the socio-political condition brought by the Spaniards in the country. Valdeavilla
(2018) also stressed out that Rizal’s writings exposed the corruption and maltreatment of the Spanish
government as well as the friars. She also added in her study that Rizal fought against the Spaniards
in a peaceful and progressive manner with all of his writings.

IIb. ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION OF THE 1ST RRL

The themes and concepts composed by Dr. Jose Rizal in his novels and other writings brought
him to death. Generally based on the statements of some authors mentioned above, Rizal exposed
everything that had been experienced by his fellow countrymen from the hands of Spaniards. But
unlike any Filipino fighters back then like Gat Andres Bonifacio and other Katipuneros who used
sharp weapons, Dr. Rizal used his pen and paper to fight bloodlessly against the Spaniards. Through
his writings, he sacrificed his life in order to take down the Spanish regime. His writings revealed all of
the pains and tyrannies managed by the invaders. With this revelation, it became a greatest issue for
the Spaniards because they believed that it persuaded the Filipinos to revolt against them.
IIIa. 2ND RRL
Laukamp (2017) believed and clearly stated in his study that the works of Dr. Jose Rizal
influenced an uprising which led to the revolution of Filipinos against Spain in 1896. Then, he added
that the two novels of Rizal detailed out the abuses of Spanish colonialism and the Catholic Church in
the Philippines back then. Besides, Clarisse (2019) pointed out that one of Rizal’s novels which
entitled Noli Me Tangere was a call or advisory for every Filipino to fight against the colonizers.
According to Ramones (2008), the Philippines including the Filipinos have had a tumultuous history
under colonial rule for centuries and Dr. Jose Rizal was one of the national heroes who helped
demonstrate for Filipinos their responsibilities to their nation and fellowmen.

IIIb. ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION OF THE 2ND RRL

After the death of Dr. Jose Rizal, many Filipinos mourned but his writings awakened their spirit
of resiliency to fight or revolt against Spanish colonial rule. His novels called the attention of
everybody and became part in the beginning of Philippine revolution. His novels denounced the
inequalities, injustices and immoralities of the dominators including the prior friars. Later, the Catholic
Churches pursued to ban Rizal’s novels because these included the actions made by the prior friars
particularly the wrongdoings. Due to these, they thought that the literary pieces of the said notable
person were attacks to their religion. These reasons led the novels of Rizal to the complicated
process of learning Patriotism. Then, some readers might think that it is dangerous to read because
of the blasphemous and seditious contents detailed out by Rizal.

IV. GENERAL CONCLUSION

It is indeed that Dr. Jose Rizal made an unforgettable contribution in the history of the
Philippines. With all of his writings such as the popular novels entitled Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo, Filipinos have opened their eyes on what were really happened in the past during the
Spanish rule. However, it might be a complicated process to learn patriotism in his novels because of
the themes and concepts that he utilized. In addition, it might be difficult for Filipinos to stand
patriotically like Dr. Rizal because they were afraid or didn’t have enough courage to fight for their
rights and freedom back then. Despite of the efforts and sacrifices that offered by Rizal on his novels,
there were still some people who disagreed with its publication. Because, for others, they believed
that the novels were not merely focus on teaching patriotism but rather they thought that these were
just to lift up Philippine revolution. Thus, others believed that the novels will just ruin the dignity and
reputation of the Catholic Church because of the scenarios that had been denounced in the pieces.
So, some people thought that reading Rizal’s novels could be dangerous at some points.

V. CLOSING STATEMENT
History is really significant to be learned because it enables us to open our eyes from reality
and to realize the importance of living. Rizal’s novels might be unnecessary for other to learn but if we
look into its deepest insights, we will realize and find out that it is worthy to learn the works of Rizal.
Dr. Rizal absolutely wanted the Filipinos to be aware and be resilient in fighting for their rights and
freedom. These were the reasons why he strived hard, continued, and offered his life to produce and
publish all his writings. He pushed himself to crack down bloodlessly the colonial rule of Spanish
because he wanted his fellow countrymen to live away from oppressions. Dr. Jose Rizal became a
most inspiring and notable person in the Philippines. His writings reflect that learning Patriotism must
be accompanied by being aware and resilient in standing for rights and freedom.
