Hooke's Extended Law

This document contains 4 questions about Hooke's law and springs. Question 1 involves calculating the tension, extension, and extra load required to extend a spring. Question 2 looks at identical springs in parallel and series configurations. Question 3 calculates values for a spring with a hanging mass. Question 4 examines identical springs connected in parallel and series with a force applied.

2.3 Hooke’s law

Question 1
A steel spring has a spring constant of 25 N m-1. Calculate:
(a) The tension in the spring when a weight of 10 N is attached;
(b) The extension it produces;
(c) The extra load that must be attached to extend it to 0.5 m.

Question 2
Two identical springs of length 250 mm are suspended in parallel. A 40 N weight is attached. The
length of each spring is now 350 mm.
(a) Calculate:
(i) The tension in each spring;
(ii) The extension of each spring;
(iii) The spring constant of each spring.

(b) Both springs are now suspended in series. Calculate:

(i) The tension in each spring;
(ii) The extension of each spring;
(iii) The spring constant of each spring.

Question 3
An object of mass 0.150 kg is attached to the lower end of a vertical spring of unstretched length
of 300 mm, which is fixed at its upper end. With the object at rest, the length of the spring
becomes 350 mm as a result. Calculate:
(a) The spring constant;
(b) The energy stored in the spring;
(c) The mass that needs to be added to extend the spring to 600 mm.

Question 4
A spring which obeys Hooke’s law has a force constant of 160 N m-1.
(a) Calculate:
(i) The extension in mm of the spring produced by a force of 4.0 N;
(ii) The strain energy stored in the spring.

(b) A second identical spring is connected in parallel with the first. Calculate:
(i) The extension in mm of each spring produced by a force of 4.0 N;
(ii) The total strain energy stored in the springs.

(c) The second spring is now connected in series. Calculate:

(i) The extension in mm of each spring when a force of 4.0 N is attached;
(ii) The strain energy stored in the springs.
