Exercise 2
Sunshine Valley Meat Company produces one of the best sausage products in Pennsylvania. The
company's controller compiled the following information by analyzing the accounting records:
______1. Meat costs the company P 5.25 per pound of sausage produced.
______2. Compensation of production employees is P 4.25 per pound of sausage produced.
______3. Supervisory salaries total P 25,000 per month.
______4. The company incurs utility costs of P10,000 per month plus P0.50 per pound of sausage produced.
______5. Insurance and property taxes average P 9,500 per month.
Write a formula to express the behavior of the firm's production costs. (Use the form Y = a + bX,
where X denotes the quantity of sausage produced.)
B. The following is a list of various costs of producing sweatshirts. Classify each cost as either a (V) variable (F)
fixed, or (M) mixed cost for units produced and sold.
Consider the graphs that follow (Horizontal axis represents activity; Vertical axis represents total pesos).
A B C
D E F
G H I
For items 1- 8 that follow, choose the graph that best represents the cost behavior pattern
described. Note: Graphs can be used more than once.

Exercise 5
The accounting department of Archer Company, a merchandising company, has prepared the following
analysis:
Cost Formula
Cost of goods sold.......................... P56 per unit
Sales commissions......................... 12% of sales
Advertising expense....................... P300,000 per month
Administrative salaries................... P160,000 per month
Billing expense............................... ?
Depreciation expense..................... P62,000 per month
The accounting department feels that billing expense is a mixed cost, containing both fixed and
variable cost elements. The billing expenses and sales in units over the last several months
follow:
The accounting department now plans to develop a cost formula for billing expense so that a
contribution format income statement can be prepared for management's use.
Required:
a. Using the least-squares method, estimate the cost formula for billing expense.
b. Assume that the company plans to sell 30,000 units during July at a selling price of $100
per unit. Prepare a budgeted income statement for the month, using the contribution format.
Exercise 6 : Segregation of Semi variable Costs
The management of Noy Sports Stadium believes that the number of sporting events
each month is a measure of activity for total clean up cost. Shown below are event
figures and total clean up costs for
Number of Sporting Events Total Clean-up Cost
July 28 P 30,900
August 34 34,200
September 16 20,700
October 22 28,200
Required:
a.Estimate Noy's cost formula for monthly clean up cost using the high-low method.
b.Estimate Noy's cost formula for monthly clean up cost using the least-squares regression
method.
SOLUTION
July 28 30,900
August 34 34,200
September 16 20,700
October 22 28,200
