The technical specifications for the tower followed are given below:
The wind load on tower body is computed based on IS: 875:2015-Part 3. The member sizes are
assumed to start with and the loads are revised after arriving at the final member sizes. The
tower is divided into thirteen panels and the load on each panel is computed as given below.
The wind load on a segment = AexCfxq, where Ae is area of the segment exposed to wind. The
details of load computation as explained above are done using a spread sheet and the output is
given below.

For the computation of the ladder it is assumed that the main legs of the ladder will be made of
flat 50x6, with the runners made from 20mm dia rods welded to the legs. The runners are spaced
at 300mm c/c. The climbing ladder width is 400mm with protective guides of 45mmx4mm flats
provided horizontally at 900mm c/c and three vertical guides made of 25mmx4mm flats. The
cable tray is located behind climbing ladder using flats of 45x4 located at 900mmc/c. A force
coefficient of 1.2 is used for rounded members and 2.0 for flat-sided members. The exposed
area of the ladder works out to 0.20sq.m/m run
Following load cases are considered for the analysis of the tower.
They are as follows:
To account for redundant, flanges, gussets an additional factor of 1.2 is used for dead loads.
Hence partial safety factor used for dead loads as per IS: 800-2007 are 1.8(For compression)
and 1.08 (For Tension).
The tower is analyzed for the above loading cases using the well-known Staad pro V8i package.
3-D space truss modules are used for the analysis. The results are given in the Appendix-1.
The design of members is done using IS 800:2007. The design of members is given in
Appendix3. All leg members are of high tensile steel and other members are of steel of normal
grade.
The forces for the design of foundation scheme are given below from analysis for the different
truncations are given below (Load case 3 & 4):
6.0 Conclusion
The report gives the design of a 40m high triangular self-supporting tower using angles only.
The main leg members are made up of hot rolled high strength equal angles. All other tower
members are of steel of normal grade. The tower can safely carry a wind speed of 200kmph.
The tower is truncated to 35m & 30m high by removing few panels at 5m from bottom. The
tower can safely carry the following number of antennas:
