1.1 LOADINGS

The code of practice is "The General Procedures and Loadings to be Adopted

for the Design of Buildings" - SANS 10160.

Factory floor loadings and specific loads due to plant including dynamic
allowances if applicable must be obtained from the mechanical consultants or
machine suppliers.

1.2 REINFORCED AND PRESTRESSED CONCRETE

Work to the code of practice for "The Structural Use of Concrete" –

SANS 10100

In general use high tensile steel (assuming fy = 450 MPa) for all except column
links, nominal stirrups in beams, bars which have to be re-bent during
construction and other special cases.

The grade of concrete in all normal reinforced structures shall be 30 MPa.

Cover to reinforcement:

Slabs - 30 mm
Plant Foundations and Plinths - 40 mm
Beams and Walls - 40 mm
Columns - 50 mm
Foundation Beams - 50 mm
Foundations - 60 mm

Section 1 2

1.3 CONCRETE STRUCTURES CONTAINING AQUEOUS LIQUIDS

Work to BS 8007:1987, preferably using the limit state (crack control) method
with grade 35W concrete and high tensile (i.e. deformed) steel.
As a guide the limit state criteria will, in general, be met provided that the
following service stresses are not exceeded:

In direct tension :

fc (tension) = 1,44 MPa, fst = 100 MPa

In bending :

fcc (compression) = 5,00 MPa, fst = 130 MPa

or
fcc = 4,00 MPa, fst = 160 MPa

Tank roofs should be designed for:

fcc = 6,00 MPa, fst = 130 MPa

or
fcc = 5,00 MPa, fst = 160 MPa

Temperature stresses must be taken into account. The relevant design

temperatures must be obtained from the mechanical consultants.

Ensure that the following note is put on all drawings of water retaining
structures.

NOTE:

- This is a water retaining structure.

- Concrete Class 35W. Maximum water/cement ratio, 0,50 unless

otherwise specified.

- Minimum cover to reinforcement = 50 mm on water faces.

- Special attention shall be taken in the construction of all joints to ensure

that the structure is watertight.

- Tolerances in accordance with SANS 1200 G to Degree of Accuracy II or

to suit mechanical plant.

- Fixing of Reinforcement in accordance with

SANS 1200 G to Degree of Accuracy I.

1.4 STRUCTURAL STEELWORK

The Code of Practice is "The Structural Use of Steelwork" - SANS 10162.

In general use mild steel Grade 350W with Grade 8.8 bolts. High tensile bolts
Grade 8.8 may be used when stresses are high or where bolts are in direct
tension but their locations must be clearly stated on the drawings. High Strength
Friction Grip bolts should in general be avoided.

1.5 GENERAL

All calculations and drawings must be done in S.I. metric units.
