STS Activity 3

This document discusses several notable Filipino scientists and inventors, including: 1. Paula Campos, a researcher in ancient DNA applications with over 50 peer-reviewed publications. 2. Angel Alcala, a renowned ecologist and biologist who identified over 50 new reptile and amphibian species in the Philippines. 3. Ricardo Sigua, a professor who wrote a textbook on traffic engineering relevant to the Philippine context. It also discusses the significance of invention to society in solving problems and driving economic growth, and how invention can both positively and negatively impact the physical environment through resource depletion and pollution.

ACTIVITY 3

A. Instructions: Choose at least six among the following Filipino scientists

and inventors, showing the profession of the scientist/ inventor his
specialization and his most significant contribution.

1.PAULA CAMPOS
- is a researcher specialized in ancient DNA applicants to archaeological,
paleontological and conservation biology questions. She received her degree in
biology in2000, her MSC in biodiversity and genetic resources in 2005 from the
University of Porto and her PHD in evolutionary biology in 2009 from University
of Copenhagen. As of January 2020, her publications include 2 thesis, 4 book
chapters, 1 technical reports and 48 papers in international peer review journals.
Of these, 15 were published in major multi-disciplinary scientific journals
including PNAS. Science and nature, but also in specialized journals like journal
of Archaeological science and molecular ecology.
Paula is funded through FCT’s individual call to scientific employment
stimulus. CEEC 2017

2.ANGEL ALCALA
- is a world renowned Filipino ecologist and biologist with more than 30
years of contributions to the field of conservation biology. He was the first
scientist to comprehensively study the reptiles and amphibians of the Philippines,
and his research led to the identifications of more than 50 new species.
Angel Alcala was born on the first of March in 1929. His mother was
Crescensia Chua, and his father was Porfirio Alcala. The family lived in Caliling,
a coastal village in Cauayan in the province of Negros Occidental in the
Philippines. Cauayan is known for its sandy beaches and prestine waters. This is
where Angel Alcala’s awareness and love for marine life began. His family lived
in a humble and rural area, being supported by the bounty of the sea.
In 1948, Alcala began an undergraduate degree in biological studies at the
private Silliman University in Dumaguete in the adjoining Negros Oriental
Province. Because of his promising potential and evident intelligence, he was
accepted to be a student of the University of the Philippines College of medicine
in Manila. However, due to the financial circumstances Alcala did not accept the
offer. In 1951, Alcala graduated Magna-Cumlaude in biological studies at
Silliman University.

3. RICARDO SIGUA
- is a professor who contributed to engineering research in the Philippines,
he is a professor at the Institute of Civil engineering in the University of the
Philippines, Diliman, wrote a book called “The Fundamentals of traffic
engineering” due to the scarcity of textbooks on the traffic engineering relevant to
the Philippine context. His book covers topics such as traffic flow, traffic studies,
intersections designs and control, geometric design of highways, road, safety,
traffic accident analysis, travel demand forecasting, the origin destination (OD
MATRIX), and the intelligent transportation system.
Electronic products accounted for 40% of the Philippines export revenue
in April 2013, according to the semiconductor and electronics industry in the
Philippines Inc. Which groups 250 Filipino and foreign companies including Intel.
The share of high-tech products among exports declined between 2008 and
2013 from 26.9 billion US Dollars to 19.7 billion dollars.

4. MARIA LIGAYA BRAGANZA

-ED. D, the Dean of the school of food and science and technology at the
Philippines Women’s University conducts applied researchers on food and
product development. One of her studies investigates the use of banana flour as
a wheat flour extender in pandesal and dough.

5. BALDOMERO OLIVERA
-Born on 1941, a Filipino chemist known for discovery of many cone snail
toxins important for neuroscience. These molecules, called conotoxins, led to a
breakthrough in the study of ion channels and neuromuscular synapses. He
discovered and first characterized E. Coli DNA, a key enzyme of genetic
engineering and recombinant DNA technology.
Olivera graduated from the University of the Philippines in 1960. He
received his PHD from the California Institute of technology (1966) in biophysical
Chemistry, followed by postdoctoral work at Stanford University from 1966-1968.
In 1970, he moved to the University of Utah, where he is now a distinguished
professor of biology. His Laboratory’s discovery was featured on the cover on the
cover of the International scientific journal science in 1990. He was Harvard 2007
“Scientist of the Year”. He is a Howard highest medical institute professor, has
been elected into the Institute of medicine and the American. Philosophical
Society, and became an elected member of the US national academy of
sciences in 2009.

6.DIOSCORO UMALI
- (NOVEMBER 17,1917-JULY 1,1992) He was a National scientist of the
Philippines awardee and is known as “the father of Philippine Plant breeding”. He
was awarded several international honors and distinctions for his outstanding
achievements and improvements of rice, corn and other economic plants. His
research studies on upland agriculture, forestry, and environment conservation
have helped many people, especially farmers, improve the quality of their crops.

B. WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE INVENTION TO SOCIETY?

-They say necessity is the mother of the invention, but invention drives the
economy. the great importance of invention is that it solves problems and
changes the world. Innovation shapes the way life is lived and transcends
culture.
Overtime, it has been possible to verify that each invention activates a
variety of benefits for the inventor and society. It stimulates their imagination
develops their potential when it comes to overcoming barriers.

It allows the ability to visualize, stimulates perceptions, provokes new

thoughts and new question.

Each invention has affected how people relate to one another and how
cultures have expanded or ended. Technology impacts how cities grow, where
people live, and who owns what. Technologies are the reason a few people are
very rich, that people are more social, and that teaching and learning is
changing.

C. HOW THE INVENTION AFFECTS THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT?

In the world, there is someone that take care so much to our planet that
has invented things that helps to not destroy it.

Their inventions maybe do not really improve our life by use them, but
they will considerably improve the quality of our global life do to the fact that they
are all inventions Eco-sustainable.

The effects of technology on the environment are both obvious and subtle.
The more obvious effects include the depletion of non-renewable natural
resources (such as petroleum, coal, ores) and the added pollution of air, water,
and land.
