Science Class - VI CH-3 (Nature of Matter) Answers

This document is about the science chapter on the nature of matter. It covers key concepts about states of matter including solids, liquids, and gases. It discusses the properties of materials, including whether they are natural or transparent. Examples are provided to illustrate concepts like diffusion of solids in liquids and how temperature affects the solubility of substances in water. Activities are also described to demonstrate these concepts experimentally, such as using a candle to show water is transparent or adding salt to water to form a saturated solution.

Class – VI CH-3 (Nature of Matter)

Answers
A. Fill in the blanks
(1) Classification
(2) space, Mass
(3) gaseous
(4) opaque
(5) diffusion
B. True and False
(1) False
(2) True
(3) False
(4) True
(5) True
C. (1) Solids only
(2) Occupies space and has mass
(3) a piece of wood
(4) gas in another gas
(5) mustard oil
D. (1) (a) Natural Material - The materials with occurs naturally are called natural
materials. Ex- Water, Air
(b) Transparent Material – The material which allow light to pass through it is called
transparent material. Ex- Air , Water
(2) (i) Three transparent materials- air, water and thin plastic sheet.
(ii) Three opaque materials – Wood, Book, Chalk
(3) (i) The gaseous state of matter can easily change its shape and volume because
particles are very loosely packed with each other.
(ii) The solid state of matter cannot change its shape and volume because particles
are tightly packed with each other.
(4) Materials diffuse into each other because their particles are in constant motion.
(5) Maximum amount of a substance that can be dissolved in a given volume of a given
liquid is called solubility.
On increasing the temperature, the solubility of a substance
generally increases.
(6) Three materials soluble in water are-
(i) Sugar (ii) Salt (iii) Lemon Juice
Three materials insoluble in water are-
(ii) Sand (ii) Mustard oil (iii) Pebbles
E (1) Solids have a fixed shape and a definite volume because their particles are tightly
packed with each other.

(2) Activity –
Pure water is a transparent liquid.
Material required – Water, glass, candle
Procedure - A transparent glass is filled with water and a candle is kept on the table .
Observation – When it is seen against the other side of the glass, the candle is clearly
seen.
Result – This shows that water is transparent material.

(3) Solid diffuses slowly in liquid.

Clean water is taken in the beaker and kept on the table, few crystals of potassium
permanganate is added in water. It is seen that water becomes pink colour. This shows
that particles of solid diffuses slowly water.

4. A solution in which more of the given substance cannot be dissolved at a given

temperature is called saturated solution.
Half filled glass of water is taken and one tea spoon of salt is added and stir ,it is seen
that salt is dissolved. Then more and more salt is added in same amount of water, the
time will come when salt will not dissolved . This is called now saturated solution

5. Activity on the effect of temperature on the solubility of solid in water.

Two glass tumblers are taken with equal volume of water .One tumbler contains hot
water and equal amount of sugar is added in both the tumblers . it is seen that more
sugar is dissolved in hot water. This shows that solubility of solid increases with
increase in temperature.
