Abstract

One of the major products we normally use for ourselves would be probably the alcohol,

because its serves specifically as an antibacterial solution that contains isopropyl and ethyl-

based. Numerous number of bananas are not being used in the most efficient way, so we found a

solution in order to produce it as a rubbing alcohol. The study aims to produce Ethyl Alcohol out

of ripe banana extract added with yeast and ferment it for 3 months. The researcher gathered

waste ripe banana peelings. The waste ripe banana peelings were washed then scrapped the inner

part of the peelings after scrapping; this was placed in the one 1-liter of water, heated until

cooked in 30 minutes. The extract is being pour into the sterilized bottle added with yeast and

partially scaled. After being fermented, the extract is distilled to produce ethyl alcohol. The ethyl

alcohol product physical characteristic is compared to commercial one.

This research was conceptualized to analyze the different components of a rubbing alcohol

in terms of its consistency and texture using banana peelings as the main component of this

research. This research also proves how efficient a banana peeling can be through series of

experiments that the researchers done all throughout this research. The entire research helps the

researchers sought whether the banana peelings can be converted as a rubbing alcohol or not.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

There are more than 100 billion bananas that are consumed every year, which makes than

a popular fruit around the world. Many of those who eat bananas generally throw the banana

peel, as they have no use for it anymore. These banana peels then turn into waste and will rot

without being used efficiently. Therefore, a way of making use of banana peels would be turning

them into something we can use every day, which is rubbing alcohol. By doing this, we are

lessening the waste that is created, and will have given you a way of using it once more.

Rubbing alcohol is defined as surgical spirit, with isopropyl alcohol products being the

most widely available. This can be an active ingredient and works as an antiseptic. Green Cross

Alcohol is one of the examples of a rubbing alcohol because it contains isopropyl and ethyl-

based rubbing alcohol. In a daily life basis, we use alcohol as a disinfecting and sterilizing agent,

because it kills bacteria, fungus and viruses.

Since ethyl alcohol production is low and the demand for it is high, the researchers chose to

study on, “Production of Ethyl Alcohol out of Banana Peelings” to meet the needs of the

community and to avoid the production of banana peelings that are just wasted by consumers

when eating its contents. The researchers conducted this study so that banana peelings can be

used as alternative raw materials in alcohol production, which is needed in our community, and

our daily lives.

Statement of the Problem

The researcher would like to find out if the banana peelings produce ethyl alcohol.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

General problem:

 How efficient are banana peelings as a substitute for rubbing alcohol?

Specific problems:

 Is there any physical characteristics that are different from the alcohol made from banana

peels?

 Is there a significant difference between the experimental alcohol and the commercial

products in terms of their fragrance?

 Is there a significant difference in texture and consistency from commercial products?

Hypothesis

The banana peel is an efficient alternative for alcohol.

Null Hypothesis

The banana peel is not an efficient alternative for alcohol.

Significance of the Study

This study opens another way for us to be able to make bananas more useful and safer,

which is much appropriate and a better way to use these waste materials. It was done as a remedy

to a common problem within our society, and it can also help in earning money when you make

this into a business venture. It can also to convert raw materials that is thought to be useless, to

form into much more useful things.

The purpose of this study is to try and discover other ways on how to make and

provide organic ethyl alcohol for the needs of the people, especially for those who highly use

commercialized alcohol products to put their hands on.

Scope and Limitations

This research is about designing and producing an alternative Ethyl Alcohol. The

researcher’s main objective is to formulate an alternative solution. This product was made for

every age, as its main purpose is to keep everyone sanitized. This study is limited to the use of

ripe banana peeling (Musa paradisiaca) extract and yeast for fermentation. Data obtained is

limited to qualitative aspects like smell, color, and other physical characteristics.

Definition of Terms

Rubbing Alcohol - refers to either isopropyl alcohol or ethanol-based liquids.

Antiseptic - are antimicrobial substances that are applied to living tissue/skin to reduce the
possibility of infection.

Ethyl Alcohol - is the alcohol found in alcoholic drinks such as beer, brandy, or whiskey. It is
made from the fermentation or chemical breakdown of sugars by yeasts.

Antimicrobial - is an agent that kills microorganisms or stops their growth.

Yeast - used in baking bread and bakery products, serving as a leavening agent which causes the
bread to rise by converting the fermentable sugars present in the dough into carbon dioxide and
ethanol.

Isopropyl Alcohol - is used in the manufacture of a wide variety of industrial and household
chemicals, and is a common ingredient in chemicals such as antiseptics, disinfectants, and
detergents.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Local

Ethyl Alcohol from Ripe Banana Peelings

According to Pepino, Ruben S., Jr. (2001-2012), this study signifies the use of waste

from ripe banana (Musa paradisiacal) peelings that pollute our surroundings when thrown

anywhere after eating ripe banana. It aims to produce ethyl alcohol out of ripe banana extract

added with yeast and ferment it for 3 months.

The color and volatility of the produced ethyl alcohol is compared to the commercial one.

In the quantitative observation the researcher used 10ml of experimental product “alcohol” tested

to its flammability in three (3) trials giving 21.167 mean value. Based on the T-test computation

results it was found out that value is greater than the P value with degree of freedom at 0.05 level

of significance.

It was concluded that the waste ripe banana (Musa paradisiaca) peeling, is a potential raw

material in production of ethyl alcohol. However, there is a significant difference on

experimental ethyl alcohol and the commercial one in terms of flammability.

Foreign

Antimicrobial Effect of Aqueous Banana Peel Extract, Iraq

According to Pharmaceutical Sciences (2013), fruit peels have been a valuable source for

maintaining human health. The use of fruit peels extracts for antimicrobial properties can be of

great significance in therapeutic treatments. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial

activity of a banana peel. The antibacterial effect of aqueous extracts of fresh yellow banana

peels against 2 Gram-positive and 4 Gram-negative bacterial and one yeast isolates, including S.

aureus, S. pyogenes, E. aero genes and K. pneumoniae with no effect against E. coli and candida

albicanis. Aqueous extracts of fresh yellow banana peels could be considered as god antibacterial

agent against both Gram positive and negative bacteria to replace the synthesis medicines in

treatment of diseases caused by these bacteria.
