Mini-Case Analysis

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) with more than 100 years of service to the Filipino people and more
than 8,000 employees nationwide, is a leader in the banking industry and has the widest universal banking
operations. Every BPI branch is practically a one-stop grocery of financial services, such as ATM, merchant
banking, car loan, credit card, housing loans, transfer of funds, payments to electric, water and phone bills, etc.
For more than a century, the Corporate Human Resources Division of BPI has been managed by the double
principles of conservatism and innovations, maximizing manpower contribution to the organization.

Acquisitions and mergers saw action at BPI in the millennium, resulting in a duplication of some of the job
positions. After several acquisitions (notably with Family Bank and Far East Bank), BPI has learned to use the
innovative approach in its human resource planning. Utilizing the “redeployment approach” involves a
matching of skills with the specification of a job. Besides, those originally from the Far East Bank are
assigned to BPI and those originally of BPI are assigned to FEB branches. To optimize manpower, 8 staff and
3 officers are positioned on big branches (called HUV) and 6 staff and 2 officers on small branches (called
Spoke). Despite the economic crisis both global and regional, clients saw stability and reliability as the
trademarks of the Bank of the Philippine Islands.

A PLEASANT MORNING TO EACH AND EVERYONE, WE ARE THE LAST GROUP AND I AM HERE
TO PRESENT OUR ANSWERS TO THE GUIDE QUESTIONS BASED ON OUR PERCEPTION AND
ANALIZATION.

Guide Questions:

1. After several acquisitions in the 21 st century, the first thing BPI did was to recruit more and more
employees. Is this correct? Explain your answer.

Based on our group analysis we think the answer would be partially no partially yes basically it is neutral.
No, Because BPI chose to focus on quality rather than quantity, they hired people and develop their skills, and
placing them on a job position that match their qualifications. Yes, Because at first they’ve hired more and
more employees and realized that they are having duplication of job positions, so they have come up to an
innovative approach which is the “Redeployment Approach”

2. If it is not recruitment, what do you think BPI did first?

We think that if it’s not recruitment, the BPI did first was they focused in maintaining the good quality of their
services instead of recruiting more employees. And alsothey used the redeployment approach by putting more
employees in a big branch and putting few employees in a small branch to optimize manpower. Yet they assure
that every employees matches their skills in the job position they were assigned.

3. Why is the BPI’s approach to human resource planning innovative? Did BPI follow the four steps in
human resource planning?

Because it shows different style or forms in maximizing manpower contribution to the

organization. And also they develop the skills of their manpower rather than recruit more employees. And
yes, BPI manages to follow the four steps. Because we believe that BPI will not be the leading banking
industry if they not use the four steps of human resource planning.

4. Did BPI do a forecasting in human resource needs? How important was forecasting human resource
need to BPI?

We think that BPI did a forecasting in human resource needs, because they manage to forecast future
needs by analyzing if they need to stick to their current staff but improve their productivity through efficiency
or new skills training or they should need to hire more potential employees.

Forecasting human resource need is important especially to a big company like BPI because big company
means bigger employment needs, so they should really understand forecasting because it can help them in
controlling and managing manpower.

5. If you had the money will you bank with BPI? Explain in 50 words or less

My group and I think that if we have money we will bank with BPI, because given the fact, that it is
one of the biggest banking business in the Philippines, also many clients rely in BPI for its trustworthy
services, they are also one of the oldest and reliable bank in the industry and they also manage to resolve
larger issues like what happen last 2017, they have experience system glitch.
