time, when he happened across this
particular Austin Cooper S in a private
collection in California, he knew he’d hit
the mother lode.
Mike and his wife, Michelle, had been
invited along to view the collection of the
recently deceased Phil Reed, who had been
a lifelong petrolhead with a passion for
brass age cars. Phil had been a regular
participant in the London to Brighton run,
and had never let 5000 miles and an ocean
get in the way of enjoying the legendary
veteran car event. When he passed away,
the collection was left to his sons, who
were the first to admit to not sharing their
father’s passion and had decided that the
cars were to be sold off. Mike agreed to go
along and take a look, thinking that his
friend Wayne Carrini might be interested.
He didn’t expect to find two Minis

and why. “Basically, the SPI and MPI Mini
ECUs control the ignition timing and fuel
injection in order to run the engines,” James

which the ECU uses is the crank position
sensor. This tells the ECU whether the engine
is turning, and what position the engine is
currently in eg piston one is at top dead

ECU can inject fuel and also fire the ignition

BUILDING FOR POWER

With all parts back from machining, the Downton’s engine comes together.

a cosmetic refresh, albeit involving a
full strip down and respray. But the
mechanicals all appeared to be in fine
irregularly worn crank, an unevenly
machined centre main cap and strap,
and a worn out camshaft and followers.
Nothing that couldn’t be rectified by a
visit to the machine shop, and a
inch of endfloat. Whether it was like that
with the other cam, I don’t know because
we never looked at that – you could

With the Downton engine, on
stripdown, we discovered quite a few
issues so it’s natural that Ben might be
even more cautious than normal. “So
you’ve got the rocker arms fitted and if
you haven’t got the specified valve lift,
you have to ask yourself why?
Sometimes, someone may have
machined something on the rocker posts
and they’re at the wrong height, so all
your valve lift is out. Thankfully, with
this, it was all bang on.”
HEART OFTHE MATTER
The oil pump, the cause of all the
trouble, has also received very close
attention. A new unit was ordered from
Swiftune at the same time as the cam. In place of the Kent CMD266, the Downton now has a Swiftune SW5 camshaft which will

we ordered a cam, followers, valve
springs and oil pump all at the same
time. We always strip the oil pumps, not
matter where they come from to make
sure there’s nothing in there. We put a
bit of oil round them and make sure it
turns freely. Sometimes an oil pump can
be a bit tight so we fill them up with
grease and then slowly turn them up on
a drill, which can bed the pump in if it’s
a bit tight. You then strip them down
and clean it all out, and you’ll find that
you’ve mated all the gears and faces
together. If they’re loose and they turn
nicely, there’s no need to do that. It tends
to depend on the brand of the pump.”
When it came to fitting the pump, Ben
made sure to order new bolts to go with
it. There still doesn’t seem to be any
obvious reason why the pump should
have worked loose, so it’s belt and braces
when it came to refitting.
The water pump was also showing its It’s not just the camshaft which came from Swiftune, all associated parts were ordered with it

inside. For the price of a good quality
pump, it would have been foolish not to
fit a new one at this stage. “We haven’t
found any more horror stories to be fair
but we have gone through everything,”
Ben continues.
“We need a few more bits – you know,
you find those things when you’re
refitting an engine,” says Ben with a
laugh. “So we need a clutch pipe and an
oil feed pipe.” The Downton originally
had an oil cooler fitted, and had been on
quite lengthy and complicated high
pressure hoses so that it could sit at
gearbox height, by the pulleys. Ben was
keen to get rid of these pipes and tidy up
the install, but since the rebuild and

it had an oil cooler really,” he says, “On a
road car they can be a bit much as you
don’t really get any oil temperature,
which can be bad. If you’re going to take
it on the track, then yes, fit an oil cooler
but for road use, I wouldn’t really

oil won’t come up to temperature, and
when the oil’s not hot, it can lead to
increased wear.”
ROCK ‘N’ ROLLER
Next stage for Ben is to get the car
running and onto the rollers, where it
will be set up to run in. This may not be
as straightforward as it sounds as the car
has been fitted with a new distributor Measuring the valve lift carefully and comparing it agains the cam spec can give a clear

starting from scratch for Ben. It will be
interesting to see how the process works,
so we’ll hopefully be following it in the
next installment. “Will can then have
the car back and he can run it in then,”
says Ben. “It won’t take a lot of running
in as it hasn’t had pistons, so a couple of
hundred miles just to get it bedded
down. Then he can drop it back and
we’ll set it up fully.”
One lesson we have learnt from this is
to never take an engine for granted –
regardless of how well it ran when it was
removed, or how carefully or for how
long it was stored out of the car. If alarm
bells hadn’t rang at that initial startup, a
few miles down the road we would have
been looking at a scrap engine. As it is,
money has been spent but we now know
exactly what we’ve got, and what we can
hope for in terms of longevity and
performance. We can’t wait to see how it BHPerformance specialises in setting up all kinds ofroad and race cars, classic and more
