GREASE

The document discusses grease market trends and grease basics. It notes that the grease market features limited product differentiation and analyzes factors like quality, cost, and performance metrics. It also examines how demand is driven by needs for higher performance greases that can reduce operating costs through improved maintenance intervals and reliability. The document then provides an overview of grease composition, functions, typical formulations, and different thickener types. It analyzes tests used to evaluate grease performance properties.

MARKET TRENDS
A Competitive Industry
There are many options in the market for
fleets with limited product differentiation.
▪ Product quality versus cost
▪ Understanding performance metrics
• Thermal/oxidative stability
• Corrosion inhibition
• Robust for longer re-greasing intervals
▪ Compatibility and color
▪ Product Performance
MARKET TRENDS
Driving Demand for Higher Performing
Grease: Cost of Operation
▪ Preventative Maintenance
• Reduced consumption
• Extended service intervals
▪ Reliability / Repair Cost
• Reduce wear
• Longer life of parts
▪ Changing Technology
• Increased speeds and loads
• Higher power output and temperature
GREASE BASICS

What is Grease?
“A solid to semi-solid product of dispersion of a
thickening agent in a liquid lubricant. Additives
imparting special properties may be included.”

“Oily stuff that doesn’t move.”

GREASE BASICS

What Makes
Grease
Different
from Oil?
It contains a
thickener!
GREASE BASICS

Grease Functions
▪ Acts as lubricant
• Prevents wear
• Reduces friction
• Resists oxidation and thermal degradation
▪ Protects against rust and corrosion
▪ Acts as a co-sealant
▪ Tolerates mild to moderate contamination
▪ Minimizes leakage and oil bleeding
▪ Can help minimize lubrication frequency

Base Oil Thickener Additives Grease

• Mineral oil • Simple metal soaps • Enhances desirable properties

• Synthetic fluid • Complex metal soaps • Suppresses undesirable

• Bio-based fluids • Non-soap thickeners properties

• Adds new properties

GREASE PERFORMANCE TEST
4-Ball Weld Test (ASTM D2596)
▪ Determines two key parameters found on most
product information sheets:
• Weld load – lowest applied load at which 4
new steel balls seize and weld
• Load wear index (LWI) – index of the ability
of a lubricant to minimize wear at applied
loads
▪ 3 steel balls in test cup, 4th fixed inchuck
• 1770 rpm, 10 seconds, 6-800 kg loads
▪ Typical weld loads are 250, 315, 400 and 500 kg
GREASE PERFORMANCE TEST

“Timken OK Load” Test (ASTM D2509)

▪ Determines the load-carrying capacity of grease
• Maximum load that can be sustained by a grease
without seizure or welding
▪ Ring on block setup
• 800 rpm, 10 min, 30 lbf (+10 lbf increments)
▪ Continuous supply of grease
• > 1 tube of grease per load
▪ Listed on grease and oil PI sheets
▪ “The results may not correlate with results from service.”
