Individualism
Individualism
quality of a society, rather than shared effort and responsibility. The term is also defined as “the
quality of being an individual; individuality”. Before starting discussing the topic, I consider that
the main question to which the sources should give the answer is: individualism – good or bad?
To start with, Wikipedia says that individualism represents itself a moral stance, political
philosophy, ideology and social outlook that emphasize the moral worth of the individual.
Individualism was very popular May Fourth Movement in 1919, and influenced a lot on young
generation seeking personal liberation and independence. Nevertheless, after the May Fourth
Movement ended, the quest for independence and individuality was repeatedly criticized, while
being an individualist was equal to being a selfish person, who does not want to be a part of
“nation” or “society”. From my point of view, individualism was even dangerous for some
countries, including China, due to their traditional respect for collectivism. Some sources even
say that individualism has become theoretical basis for private capitalism production following
the First World War. Moreover, as the Second World War unfolded, the fight for survival
benefited the collectivism and the idea of social organism, and the idea of individualism
disappeared.
After a long time, the idea of individualism is back. The new generation does not want to follow
the rules, to be the same as others. Every single person wants to be unique in his own way. In
my opinion, nowadays teenagers are mostly interested to find the answer to the question “who
am I?”. People do want to express their identity by wearing specific clothes, listening to a
specific music, maybe even communicating with others in a certain way. However, personally
speaking, I would say that the tendency to be unique and the fear of “not to be like others” might
cause some psychological diseases, like depression, due to not fulfilling their desire to stand out
from the crowd.
At the same time, some people claim that individualism helped some people to get ready to stand
for what they believe, what they think, what they want. Individualism allows our minds to think
outside the box, to believe that there is no one like us, that we are able to influence the quality of
our lives. The things that make a person to be an individual help us progress as human beings.
I am sure, that without individualism our life would be boring. If everyone was the same, had the
equal traits and the same way of thinking, there would not be any progress, and the humanity
would be stuck at the same level of evolution. The orthodox people claim that Jesus once said:
the salvation do not depend on what tribe you belong to, but on how you choose to live your life.
So, is the individualism good or bad? I do not think that there is a specific answer for this
question, because, as the individualism tells us, everyone is different. As far as I am concerned,
if you have your own opinion, your individual traits, you do not depend of others and still are a
part of society, contributing to it in a positive way, your individualism will be praised and
celebrated.
