Adrenal Medulla

The adrenal medulla forms 20% of the adrenal gland mass. It is made up of interlacing cords of chromaffin cells, which secrete catecholamines. There are two main types of chromaffin cells: adrenaline-secreting cells (90%) and non-adrenaline secreting cells (10%). The hormones secreted by the adrenal medulla are catecholamines, including adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine. Catecholamines are synthesized from the amino acid tyrosine in the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla. They have similar effects of sympathetic stimulation but adrenaline's effects are more prolonged.
