REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Key point of removal
CAUTION
As the tire assembly is heavy, be careful in its handling.
1. Chock the rear wheels.
2. Loosen the wheel nuts in advance, using the wheel nut wrench
and lever.
Tool name Tool number Specifications
Wheel nut wrench 99505 00Z00 ISO-type width across flat: 33 mm
Lever 99506 Z0000 –
NOTE
The left and right wheel nuts have the same right-hand
threads.
3. Place a jack under the front axle and raise the front of the vehi-
cle. For safety's sake, place a safety stand under each side of
the front of the frame. As for the jack up point and the safety
stand enabling point, see the Fgrp00 General.
4. Remove the wheel nut and tire assembly
.
CAUTION
When removing the tire assembly, be careful not to
damage the thread of the hub bolt with the disc wheel.
The wheel and the hub are centered by matching their
in-low positions. So do not forcefully move or twist
them when removing or installing.
3. Apply two drops of engine oil or gear oil to the threaded por-
tions of the wheel nuts and between the nuts and washers (the
tapered portion). Wipe away any excess with a clean waste
cloth.
FA-6
CAUTION
Do not let the oil contact the areas indicated by in the
drawing (including user paint and rust).
NOTE
Do not use molybdenum grease for this purpose (if used,
tightening torque becomes too strong, causing break of
the wheel nut and hub bolt).
4. Set the tire assembly in a way that the hub bolt comes to the
center of the disc wheel hole. Slightly tighten the wheel nuts at
3 places and make sure that the wheel is at the center of the
bolt hole
.
CAUTION
When installing the tire assembly, be careful not to
damage the thread of the hub bolt and wheel nut with
the disc wheel.
5. Place a jack under the front axle and raise the front of the vehi-
cle, then slowly put down the vehicle.
6. After slightly tightening the wheel nut until it touches the wheel
(tightening torque: approximately 100 N•m {10.2 kgf•m}),
tighten the nut with the specified torque in accordance with the
sequence indicated in the drawing.
Tightening torque [N•m {kgf•m}]: 550 - 600 {56 - 61}
FA-7
7. Jack up and tighten.
If the tightening with the specified torque has been done when
the tire is contacting the ground, tighten the nut again with the
specified tightening torques while turning the disc wheel so
that lower bolt comes to the upper position
.
CAUTION
Apply the jack at the jacking-up point accurately.
Since the wheel nuts may loosen due to initial settling,
retighten wheel nuts when the vehicle is driven for 50 to 100
km after the wheel is installed.

Bending and twisting of front axle
1. Place the front axle on a table in a way that the surface of the
front axle's spring sheet stays in a horizontal level.
2. Hang strings through the left and right kingpin holes and attach
weights to both edge of the string.
3. Watching the front axle from directly above, measure the dis-
tances from the centers of the dowel pin holes which are on
the surfaces of the left and right spring sheets and check if the
left and right distances are equal. If the left and right distances
are different, determine the bending of the front axle in the
front and rear direction. To know the bending in the vertical
direction, measure the distances from the string to the spring
sheet's surface which is just below the string and check if the
left and right distances are equal. If they are different, deter-
mine the bending in the vertical direction.
4. Assemble the centering pins to the kingpin holes at the left and
right of the axle. Check if the left and right centering pins coin-
cide by visual check from one edge as shown in the drawing,
or if the angles made by the left and right spring sheet sur-
faces and the centering pins are correct. This way, the twist of
the front axle can be determined.
Kingpin angle
Stand the axle gauge at the center of the spring sheet surface and
apply the scale plate of the gauge edge to the side of the centering
pin. Read the angle indicated by the scale plate and determine it
with this angle.
Maintenance standard Service limit
8° –
If the value is out of the prescribed range, change the tie-rod end
assembly.
FA-18
Inspection of wheel nut
1. If there is enter of foreign materials or shortage of lubricant on
the taper surface, surface roughing such as biting may occur.
If there is surface roughing, the wheel cannot be rotated
smoothly. If you try to rotate it with hands, there is feeling of
dragging. If there is enter of foreign materials such as paint,
the wheel slacks causing loosening. Remove the foreign mate-
rials by blasting air, and lubricate the necessary areas. If the
wheel does not smoothly rotate, change it with new one.
FA-19
Inspection and cleaning of hub bolt
1. Make sure that there are no scratches throughout the area.
2. Make sure that there is no crushing, thinning, biting, etc. on
the screw.
NOTE
If there are foreign materials, paint, etc. sticking to the
screw, it may cause damage or loosening of the screw.
3. Clean the screws, before installing wheel nut.
NOTE
Do lubrication after cleaning.
4. If there is something abnormal, change the hub bolt.
NOTE
To prevent abnormal events, carefully install and remove
the wheel, and implement the inspection, cleaning and
lubrication for the wheel nut, the hub bolt and the screw.
To change the hub bolt, see the section Replacement of
hub bolt.

ADJUSTMENT
PRELOAD OF HUB BEARING
1. Tighten the adjusting nut (width across flat: 70 mm) through
the thrust washer with specified torque 200 N•m {20 kgf•m}
using the socket as tools (99535 Z0078).
2. Rotate the hub drum 2 to 3 times to stabilize the bearing, and
tighten the adjusting nut again with the specified torque.
3. Return the adjusting nut by 1/4 to 1/6 rotation.
4. While rotating the hub drum 2 to 3 times, hit the brake drum or
the hub with a plastic hammer.
5. Hang a string on the hub bolt and wind it around the half of the
hub. Hang a spring scale to the tip of the string.
6. Pull the spring scale horizontally and measure the load (hub
bolt position). If the preload is greater than the maintenance
standard value, return the adjusting nut.
Unit: N {kgf}
Item Maintenance standard Service limit
Preload of hub bearing 17 - 45 {1.7 - 4.6} –
7. After adjusting the preload, install the lock plate, fix it with a
bolt, and stop the rotation of the adjusting nut.
Tightening torque [N•m {kgf•m}]: 7 - 9 {0.7 - 0.9}
NOTE
If the adjusting nut and the lock plate hole position do
not match, turn over the lock plate and adjust the posi-
tion within the specified preload.
The hole-matching of the lock plate is adjusted by tight-
ening it if the preload is light, or by loosening it if the pre-
load is heavy.
8. Turn the hub two or three times and check that it does not
wobble.
FA-26
WHEEL ALIGNMENT
To check the wheel alignment and the tire turning angle, bring the
vehicle to a horizontal place and inspect the following points. If
there is something wrong, correct it.
Air pressure of tires.
Backlash of the front wheel bearing.
Installation state of the steering gear box and the steering link-
age.
Operation of the shock absorber.
That the vehicle is empty.
The empty vehicle means that the engine oil and the cooling
water are full up to the prescribed level. Fuel is full, and the
spare tires and hand tools are readily available at the pre-
scribed positions.
Toe-in
CAUTION
Adjust the toe-in when the tires are contacting the
ground.
3. Place the toe-in gauge in front of the tire and parallel to the
axle, and match the gauge's pointer with the mark above.
Read the distance between the marks and make it A.
4. Slowly move forward the vehicle, and turn the front tires 180°.
CAUTION
Do not turn the tires more than 180°. If they have turned
in excess, redo the procedures from 1.
5. Bring the toe-in gauge to the backside of the axle. Read the
distance between the marks the same way as step 3, and
make it B.
FA-27
6. The value B minus A is the toe-in value. Make sure that it is
within the prescribed value range. If it can be confirmed,
tighten the tie-rod end clamp bolt with prescribed torque. If it is
not in the prescribed value range, adjust it with the tie-rod.
