Min 301 T1 - 2021

This document contains 6 problems related to dynamics of machines. The problems involve determining forces, couples, and pin forces required for equilibrium of linkages under various applied loads. Problem 6 additionally involves determining shaking forces on a slider-crank mechanism through combined static and inertia force analysis.

MIN-301: Dynamics of Machines
Tutorial 1
1. Determine the couple T2 applied on link 2 necessary for equilibrium (FIG.1). Find the pin
forces. The force P is applied to link 4. (O2A = 10 cm, AB = 33 cm)

1800N

2. A known couple T4 is applied to link 4, and a known force P is applied to link 3 (FIG.2). What
couple T2 must be applied to link 2 for equilibrium? (O2A = 13 cm, AB = 19 cm, O4B = 18 cm)

3. Known forces F3, F4, F6 are applied to link 3, 4 and 6 respectively (FIG 3). What couple T2
applied to link 2 is necessary for equilibrium? What are the pin forces?

4. Refer to Fig.2. For an assumed value of friction in the pins such that the radius of the friction
circle is 6mm for each pin, determine the couple T2 for impending motion of the link 4 to the right.
5. Refer to Fig. 1. For a coefficient of sliding friction of 0.15, and for an assumed value of friction
in the pins such that the radius of the friction circle is 5mm for each pin, determine the couple T2
and the pin forces for impending motion of the link 4 to the right.
6. The slider-crank mechanism of a single- cylinder diesel engine is shown in Fig.4. A gas force
P=17800N acts to the left through piston pin C. The crank rotates CCW at a constant speed of
1800 rev/min. Using suitable scales for the mechanism, velocity, acceleration and force, make a
combined static and inertia force analysis. Determine
(a) the forces F12 and F14 and the torque T2 in N-m exerted by the crankshaft on the crank for
equilibrium.
(b) the magnitude and direction of the
shaking force and its location from point O2.
O2B = 75 mm, O2G2 = 50 mm, M2=2.25 kg,
I2=0.005 kgm2,

BC = 285 mm, BG3=125 mm, M3=3.63 kg,

I3=0.04 kgm2, M4=2.75 kg,
