The document discusses the Malaysian government's decision to change university intake dates from July to September. While aligning intake dates with overseas universities may enhance Malaysia's status as an education hub, the change also introduces several issues. It reduces time for students to master their programs before convocation dates. It leaves SPM candidates with too much time off before university that could diminish their potential. It also shortens the Christmas holiday for many students. Overall, the document disagrees with the change and argues the drawbacks are on par with any benefits.

University September Intakes
The academic term of the public and private institutions of higher learning will start in September instead of the usual July intakes as it has been announced by Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, the deputy Higher Education Minister. This is to align and standardise the intakes and semesters with the universities in the northern hemisphere as these countries house most of the universities in the world. Since the announcement, there have been a numerous number of people who are sounding their supports and disagreements. I , for one, disagree with this major action that the government has decided upon. I cannot deny that aligning the semesters with the overseas universities can receive many benefits to Malaysia in terms of enhancing our status of being a regional education hub. Nevertheless, many are concerned that their convocation dates will also be delayed as they will be tied down to jobs after their July classes. Since the government hasn¶t release any news on any change in dates of students¶ convocations. Even if the convocation dates are not changed, this means that students have even less time to thoroughly master all the components in their programmes in time for their convocations. Starting the university intakes in September grants the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysian (SPM) candidates too much time off before entering Universities. The approximately nine month learning-free period before university admission is a n absolute waste of time in my opinion, since students may spend that time already in class and already starting their tertiary education. It would be a lost to our country if these fresh minds are not harnessed as soon as possible. Instead of immediately pu rsuing their studies, they wi ll be left with ample time to slowly corrode their potentials and this will diminish the education system. There are also sounds of disapproval from Christian students who are concerned about their Christmas holidays. With the September intakes, the usual three weeks Christmas holidays is cut down to just one unsatisfying week. This goes to the non - Christians as well since school holidays are usually in late November and December and the time spent with their families is too short. Students are not able to fu lly spend their time with loved ones as they have to immediately return to their studies a short while after they just started their break. Family gatherings, class reunions and such will not be able to be carried out as it will conflict with students¶ schedules. This can actually lessen the bonds between family members. Hence, I feel that even though this new change in the academic calendar will bring many benefits to our country, nevertheless problems and contra dictions will always arise. Even with the change, the drawbacks of the arrangements will, in my view, be at par with the benefits gained and vice versa without the change. I stand firm with my judgment and think that this sudden change is too drastic that many problems, how petty they may seem, are overlooked by the government.
