Poverty is the main reason why some children at very young age, are now
expose in a strenuous and even hazardous work just to earn for a living. Instead of
enjoying their childhood with fun-filled memories playing with their playmates, going to
school for them to learn They skip it and decided to go to work in order for them to feed
their family. At very young age, these children now carry a great responsibility that lies
in their shoulders. To the extent that their rights to become a child and to live as a child
Child labor is very alarming since according to the report, there is now 2.06
million of Filipino children who are now working and/or engaging in a strenuous work
and hazardous activities. The trending story of Reymark, a 10-year-old boy that was
country. In fact, here our locality in Compostela I have met some of them. There are
some children who are now working in rice and corn fields, farms, and banana
plantations. Others are also working as miners. They even risk their lives for the sake of
effort to address the issue most especially the poverty. There are various projects,
programs and interventions made and implemented by the government both local and
organizations. Such measures are significant to alleviate the poverty and lessen the
child labor.
One thing I know is the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4P’s). The
indigent families are being provided with financial assistance from the government for
their basic needs as well as the needs of their children. Though the assistance received

as SPES or summer job. This program was initiated by the local government in
partnership with DOLE and other private sectors. The SPES program allows the poor
but deserving students and out of school youth to work in the government offices and
other private establishments for 20 days. These allows the students to work in the
different offices with light or minimal tasks. This will let them experienced working in the
government and how the office operates. It also gives them insights on what career that
other sustainable livelihood programs to the poor families. Aside from that, government
agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development and Department of
Health also have various programs like Responsible parenthood and Family Planning.
There are so many programs and projects to mention that are being implemented. Such
programs could be a big help in alleviating the poverty to end the child labor.
For me what the government is doing right now to address the poverty including
the child labor is commendable. However, we are still so far or even meeting the half-
way in reaching our goal to be a financially and economically stable. There are still
almost 18 million Filipinos under the poverty line. The government cannot do it alone. It
needs our help. It needs our participation. Our role as a teacher also plays a significant
part. Let us continue to our mission and goals. Let us teach the children with various life
skills and let us mold them to be a productive and responsible citizen in the future. Let
Again, our government cannot do it alone. It needs a helping hand not only for
few but for all citizens. Let us take our part. For it takes a total collaborative effort to
