Setting up of a labour room


Introduction :- The responsibilities of obstetrical nursing services includes
prenatal care , observation and comforting of patient in labour, providing
assistance in delivery room, care of the mother in prenatal care of the newborn.
Obstetrics nurse participate in instructing the new mother in postnatal and care
of new born.

1) A room or an area in a hospital that is equipped for delivering baby.

2) A room or an area set aside for making or receiving delivering , as for


circulating books in a library.
a) The obstetrical unit should be located so as to prevent unrelated traffic
through the unit and to provide for reasonable protection of mothers from
infection and from cross infection.

b) An emergency communication system connected to the operations and


control station shall be provided by the facility.

c) Resusitation facility for the neonates should be there.

Requirements
A labour room should be provided following requirements:-

1) A minimum of 80sq. ft. of area should be provided per labor bed.


2) The labor room should be located so as to permit visual observation of
each room from the nurse s’ work station .
3) Labor room should afford privacy, and shall be conveniently located with
reference to the delivery room .
4) If labor room also serve as birthing rooms , they should be equipped to
handle obstetric and neonatal emergencies.
5) A labor roomshould contain facilities formedication, hand washing, charting
and storage for supplies and equipment.
6) At least one shower with direct access from within the delivery unit shall be
provided.
7) At least two labor beds with adjacent toilet should be provided for each
delivery room.
8) No more than two labor beds may be located in one labor room.
9) A toilet with hand washing facilities should be provided for the staff.
10) A separate recovery room may be omitted in facilities with less than
1500 births per year.
11) Provision for medicine dispensing, hand washing , clinical sink with
bedpan washer and equipments.
12) When a facility elects to provide labor , delivery and recovery room
service as a part of its total services, each LDR room should have a
minimum of 250 sq. ft. of floor space exclusive of toilet.
13) A LDRP services should be there.
14) The following should be there:-*If analgesia is used , beds should be
equipped with side rails and there shall be facilities for examination and
preparation of patients.
15) The obstetrical unit should be provided with the following services
either in individual rooms, alcoves or other open spaces not subject to
traffic;
 Scrub facilities with stations located adjacent to each pair of delivery
rooms and arranged to minimize incidental splatter on nearly personnel
or supply carts.
 A storage room for equipment and supplies.
 One delivery room with support services meeting the requirement of a
surgical operating room and support services.
 One janitor’ s closet exclusively for use by the obstetrics unit.
16) A soiled workroom may not be shared with the surgical unit and
should contain a flushing device, a work counter and sink equipped for
hand washing, a waste receptacle and a linear receptacle.
17) Fluid clothing disposal facilities convenient to the delivery rooms ; the
flushing device in a soiled workroom meets this requirements.
18) Lounge and toilets facilities for obstetrical staff.
19) Staff clothing change areas appropriate for male and female personnel
working within obstetric unit.
20) Clean workroom or clean supply room.
21) Anesthesia workroom for the cleaning, testing and storage of
anesthesia equipment with a work counter and sink.
22) Space for storage of nitrousoxide and oxygen cylinders.
23) The delivery room meet the requirements for surgical operating
rooms.
24) Support services required for surgical operating rooms shall be
provided.
