Math 1f Activity No. 2

The characters McClane and Carver needed to put exactly 4 gallons of water on a scale to prevent a bomb from exploding. They only had a 5-gallon jug and a 3-gallon jug. To solve this, they first filled the 5-gallon jug and poured 3 gallons into the 3-gallon jug. They then emptied the 3-gallon jug and poured the remaining 2 gallons from the 5-gallon jug into it. Finally, they refilled the 5-gallon jug and poured 1 gallon into the 3-gallon jug to get a total of 4 gallons.

MATH 1F ACTIVITY NO.

2
2. In the movie Die Hard: With a Vengeance, in one of the action scenes, the characters McClane
and Carver were caught in a breathtaking scenario where they need to keep a bomb from
exploding, and the only way to prevent explosion is to put exactly four gallons of water on a
scale. How would they do it if they only have a five-gallon and a 3-gallon jug?

Ans.
First, they need to fill up the five-gallon jug to the top. Out of those five gallons, they need to
pour three into the other jug, filling it up. Now that the remaining two gallons in the five-gallon
jug are exact, they need to empty out the three-gallon jug and pour those 2 gallons into it. Then
they must completely fill up the five-gallon jug again. Knowing that the three-gallon jug needs
exactly one gallon to be completely filled, they can use one gallon from the five-gallon jug to get
exactly four.
