The MA5606T provides the broadband access service.
! In the downstream direction, the MA5606T provides a high speed Internet access for
subscribers in remote areas.
! In the upstream direction, it connects to a BRAS on the convergence layer through its
GE or FE optical port. The BRAS then authenticates the users, and manages the users
and services.
The major access means include:
! Broadband access such as ADSL2+, SHDSL and VDSL2
! xDSL access by connecting to the IP DSLAM through the GE/FE ports

Product Description 3 Network Applications

3.2 Subtending Application

The MA5606T supports Ethernet subtending. It allows multiple tiers of DSLAMs in a
subtending topology through the GE/FE ports. This helps to greatly expand the network
coverage. Subtending application suits scenarios where there are a large number of users.
The MA5606T can subtend with other IP DSLAMs or MA5600T service shelves through the
GE/FE ports on the main control and uplink board (MCU).

3.3 FTTN Application

The MA5606T can function as an ONU in an FTTN network to provide access to residential
community users. It connects to the OLT through the GPON port.

3.4 QinQ Application

The 802.1q in 802.1q (QinQ) application allows allocation of public VLAN IDs to user
packets with 802.1q tags so that the packets can be transmitted over the backbone network
using the public VLAN IDs. In this way, public VLAN ID resources are saved, facilitating
P2P interconnection between private line users across the MAN.

Issue 01 (2006-12-08) Huawei Technologies Proprietary 19

SmartAX MA5606T
3 Network Applications Product Description

In the QinQ application, the packet transmitted in the backbone network has two layers of
802.1Q tags: a public VLAN tag and a private VLAN tag.
Figure 3-3 illustrates the implementation of QinQ, as introduced below:
! At the user side
The enterprise user traffic adopts xDSL access and is delivered in the VLAN mode. As
shown in Figure 3-3, the users of VLAN 1 and VLAN 2 can access the MA5606, on
which QinQ is enabled. The MA5606T adds a public VLAN tag (VLAN 3) to the user
packet, and forwards the packet to the upstream network.
! At the network side
In the backbone network, the packet is transmitted using the public VLAN tag. After the
packet reaches the MA5606T on the other side of the backbone network, the MA5606T
removes the public VLAN tag from the packet, and passes the packet to the equipment at
the user side.

3.5 VLAN Stacking Application

The MA5606T supports the VLAN stacking to realize the VLAN extension and private line
wholesale service.
! When the VLAN extension and user identification are needed, a BRAS is required.
! When private line wholesale service is needed, the upstream network needs to be in the
L2 working mode so that the packets can be directly transmitted using VLAN IDs and
MAC addresses.
In the VLAN stacking application, the user packet is untagged before reaching the MA5606T.
When the packet reaches the MA5606T, it is tagged with two VLAN tags (outer VLAN and
inner VLAN), and then transmitted to the associated ISP based on the outer VLAN tag. A user
is identified by the inner VLAN tag.

3.6 Triple Play Application

The MA5606T supports the functionality of offering narrowband, data, and video services to
end users simultaneously with appropriate QoS. Such a scenario is called triple play.
The MA5606T supports the multi-PVC triple play and single-PVC triple play solutions.
! Multi-PVC triple play solution
Different PVCs are used to distinguish traffic from different services.
The MA5606T supports mapping of different PVCs to different service VLANs, and
adding different 802.1p priority tags to the VLANs.
In this application, a gateway must provide multiple Ethernet ports and support binding
between the Ethernet port and the PVC.
! Single-PVC triple play solution
It supports differentiation and control of the service traffic based on the following
attributes of the user side packets:
− Ethernet network type
− VLAN ID
− 802.1p domain
In this application, reconfiguration of the legacy home gateway is not needed, thus
saving the PVC resources.

In this scenario, triple play users are connected to the MA5606T through the home gateway.
The MA5606T provides voice service, data (Internet access) service, and video service to the
users.
! Voice service
After having passed the home gateway, VoIP packets reach the MA5606T. The
MA5606T then transmits the packets to the NGN network, or transmits the packets to the
PSTN network through a trunk gateway (TG).
! Data service
Data packets from PCs are transmitted to the MA5606T through the home gateway, and
then to the IP network in the upstream direction after being processed by the BRAS.
! Video service
− Video service is delivered over IP multicast traffic, supplying users with various
program sources.
− The MA5606T manages the multicast users' authorities and the programs based on
IGMP proxy and controllable multicast. After the users have passed the
authentication, the MA5606T transmits the IGMP protocol packets to the equipment
at the convergence layer.
− The video server transmits the video service traffic to the MA5606T through the
backbone network and convergence network. The MA5606T forwards the traffic to
the user terminals based on the authentication results.
− At the user end, the set top box (STB) is used to terminate video signals, perform
media conversion, and control program switching.
