Sample Paper: Math Comprehensive Examination

This document summarizes a 3-hour math comprehensive examination with 7 questions worth a total of 60 marks. Question 1 involves solving a system of first-order ODEs, finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix, and using initial conditions to find solutions. Question 2 requires calculating derivatives and finding the direction of most rapid temperature change at a point. Question 3 evaluates a line integral over a cylinder. Question 4 and 5 require using separation of variables and Fourier transforms to solve partial differential equations with given boundary and initial conditions. Question 6 involves solving an eigenvalue problem that arises from a vibrating string problem. Question 7 requires solving a second-order differential equation modeling a spring-mass system with different forcing functions over time.

Sample Paper: Math Comprehensive Examination

Day: XXX Max Time: 3 hours

Date: XXX Max Marks: 60
Passing Marks: 30

Note: This is an open notes/books exam. There are SEVEN questions.

1. Consider the following system of first-order ODEs: (10 marks)

dy(t)
t + Ay = b
dt
where

y1 (t) 1 5 −1
y(t) = , b= , A=
y2 (t) −1 −1 5

(a) Find the eigenvalues λ1 ,λ2 and respective eigenvectors e1 ,e2 of A.

(b) Assuming the form y(t) = α1 (t)e1 + α2 (t)e2 , and b = β1 e1 + β2 e2 , obtain uncoupled ODEs for α1 (t)
and α2 (t).
(c) Using the initial conditions y1 (1) = y2 (1) = 1, find the solutions y1 (t) and y2 (t) for t > 0.

2. The temperature in a body is given by T = x2 + xy + yz. At the point (2,1,4) what is the value of the
derivative of the temperature (i) in the x direction, and (ii) in the direction of the vector î − 2ĵ + 2k̂? Also
determine the direction in which the temperature is changing most rapidly at the point (2,1,4). (5 marks)

3. Evaluate A u · n̂dA in two ways, if u = xî + xĵ + z 2 k̂ and A is the cylinder bounded by z = 0, z = 8 and
R

x2 + y 2 = 4. (5 marks)

4. Use the method of separation of variables to obtain the solution u(x, t) of the partial differential equation
(10 marks)

ut = 2uxx − ux , 0<x<1

subject to the boundary conditions u(0, t) = 0, u(1, t) = 0 and initial condition u(x, 0) = 3ex/4 sin(5πx).

5. Use the appropriate Fourier transform to obtain the solution u(x, t) of the initial value problem (Cauchy
problem) (10 marks)

2
ut = uxx + 2u + (1 − 4x2 t)e−x , −∞ < x < ∞, t > 0
u(x, t), ux (x, t) → 0 as x → ±∞, t > 0
u(x, 0) = 0, −∞ < x < ∞

6. When solving the problem of a vibrating string with variable density using the separation variations tech-
nique, one encounters the following eigenvalue problem (10 marks)

d2 X λ
+ X = 0, 0 < x < 1,
dx2 (1 + x)2

1

with X(0) = 0 and X(1) = 0. Find the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions.

7. Consider a case with an undamped spring mass system is subjected to different forcing functions in different
time intervals. The governing equation of motion of such a system is given by (10 marks)

d2 x
+ x = f (t),
dt2
where
t, 0 ≤ t ≤ π,
f (t) =
πeπ−t , t > π.
The initial conditions are x(0) = 0 and dx
dt (0) = 1. Find the displacement x(t). Note that one needs to
enforce the requirement that the displacement and the velocity is continuous at all time.
