Let’s Get Started

A logo is considered as a symbol to represent a product, company, or an

organization. A logo is used for immediate recognition of the viewer. Logos are used to
promote and advertise a product or entity to consumers.
Types of Logo
1. Lettermark - this logo consists of letters that represent the company name. It also shows
the acronym of a brand name. Companies often prefer to use a lettermark logo to
provide faster branding to the consumer. At the same time, it saves space especially
for products with longer names.

2. Wordmark this type of logo differs from the lettermark as it uses words to represent the
company. Oftentimes, the company name is written in the logo design in order to
familiarize viewers or consumers of the product with the company. The wordmark is
also preferred in order to avoid confusion with the product and the logo design.

3. Pictorial/Abstract- pictorial logo resembles an actual object. The drawn object on the
logo needs to be related to the actual product. Everyday objects can be drawn to
represent a product. On the other hand, an abstract logo uses shapes or lines that do
not resemble any objects. Geometric shapes are often used in abstract logos since
they are easily remembered by viewers. These two types of logos are often used by
companies that are already known by many people. Well-established brands use
pictorial or abstract logos to represent exclusivity of the brand.

4. Combination Oftentimes, companies use a combination type of logo. This includes the
use of a lettermark or wordmark partnered with a pictorial/abstract design. This logo
design uses a text and drawing in order to build brand identity to the viewer. Many
companies use this type of logo as transition to pictorial or abstract.

Designing a Logo
A design software can be used in creating logos. It consists of different functions that
enable the designer to easily create lines and shapes. Unlike doing a manual drawing of a
logo, logo designers can edit and modify their work without having to redraw everything.
An example of a design software is Inkscape. This is an open-source program and can
easily be downloaded in your personal computer or laptop. It has design tools that are quite
similar to other design software.
For this lesson, you will learn how to use the design tools in this to draw lines, shapes,
and even incorporate colors to a logo design. You will also discover essential tools in
designing logos.
When you open the program, you will see all the important tools at the left side of the
screen. One of them is the bezier tool which is used for drawing lines and shapes.
The bezier tool resembles the tip of a ballpen. To use this tool, just click the bezier tool
icon from the toolbox. Click on the canvas where you want to start your line. You will notice
that it starts to project a line that moves according to the movement of your cursor. Just click
anywhere on the canvas where you want your line to end. You may continue to draw
additional segments by doing the same process. To make a shape, join the line with another
point to close the shape. Coloring your shape is also easier since you only need to select
your desired color from the color swatch on the bottom of the screen. Before doing that,
double-click the Fill color located at the bottom left corner. The Fill window will appear.
Choose flat color and click your desired color using the color swatches. If you also want to
change the color of the outline of the shape, double-click the Stroke color and the
Stroke window will appear. Select your desired color. In addition, you may change the
thickness of the outline by switching to the Stroke Style tab and adjust the thickness of the
line.
In designing lettermark and wordmark logos, you need to use the Text tool which is
located in the toolbox. This icon is represented by the letter 'A'. Click the icon and drag the
cursor to your desired starting point of the text and release the cursor once you achieve the
desired size of your text box. Write the letter or word that you will use for your logo design.
Adjust the font style and font size using from the drop-down option located at the top part of
the screen. You may use the select icon to move text and shapes in your canvas.
