Exercise 1: ‘Polly helps a friend’ – Part 1
1. What is Polly’s mothers name?
Ans: Polly’s mothers name is Barbara.

2. What do you think Polly’s favorite things are that are in the bag
her mother is carrying?
Ans: Things that could be in Polly’s bag are drawings she made, sketch
books, paints, etc.

3. Write down five details that you have learnt about Polly’s
appearance and the clothes she is wearing.
Ans: Polly has a pink ribbon from her yellow pig tails. She wore her new
shorts outfit with blue and pink flowers. Polly has blue eyes. She also has
a pink face. Polly was very happy and she had the biggest smile.

4. What three things does Polly’s mother do to pass the time while
Polly plays in the park?
Ans: Polly’s mother used to talk to other women or knit or she would take
out a novel from Polly’s backpack.

5. Using your own words, explain why Polly is glad when her mother
meets some friends.
Ans: Polly is glad when her mother meets some friends because they
would start talking and she would get extra playtime.

6. Explain using your own words, the following expressions from the
text:
a) ‘They would trade stories about their children’
b) ‘her brisk jaunt’
Ans: a) This phrase means that they talk about their children.
b) This phrase means an active journey for pleasure.
7. What do you understand by the phrase ‘a shivery joy’? Why do
you think Polly experiences this feeling?
Ans: This phrase means that Polly was very happy to go down the slide.
She experiences this feeling as she was overjoyed to be on the slide.

8. Choose three words or phrases used by the writer that convey the
idea that this was a special day and give reasons for why you have
chosen them.
Ans: a) Polly loved the slide. The phrase tells that Polly enjoyed going to
these trips to play on the slide.
b) Barbara enjoyed these outings as much as Polly. This phrase tells us
that Barbara who is Polly’s mother also enjoyed these trips.
c) Polly’s bicycle barely stopped as she jumped off. This phrase tells that
Polly is so excited, she almost jumps off her bicycle.

9. The writer repeats the word ‘wonderful’ many times in this opening
section of the story. Why do you think she does this? Give reasons
for your answer.
Ans: The writer repeats ‘wonderful’ many times because everything is
wonderful from Polly’s point of view.

10. Give examples from the story of words and phrases that show
that the writer is telling this story from Polly’s point of view. Explain
as fully as you can the effects achieved by this.
Ans: Wonderful things were a part of these trips, wonderful sunshine,
wonderful breeze, wonderful colors and most importantly, the big
wonderful silver slide. This sentence shows everything is wonderful and
Polly also thinks the same.
