CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Now days, electricity has become a need of every single human, demand

of electricity increasing day by day. This new generation needs lots of electrical

power for their different operations. Due to this many source are wasted and

exhausted in a large amount. There are various ways to generate electricity. The

human bio-energy being wasted if it can be made possible for utilization it will be

very useful energy sources.

The process of producing electrical power from different types of energy

sources is called electricity generation. This type of energy is an essential part of

nature. We generate electricity (secondary energy source) by converting primary

sources of energy like atomic, gasoline, coal and other natural resources. Fossil

fuels pollute the environment. Atomic power plant requires careful handling of

both raw as well as waste material. From the birth of earth, man has needed and

used energy at an increasing rate prior to his existence. The world has already

used large amount of energy resources for power production. The extensive

usages of available resources in recent years created a demand for the future

generation. After realizing the availability of the non-renewable sources, the

renewable sources of energy like wind, water, and sun are being consistently and

increasingly used by people to generate power. Therefore, our focus now is on

the renewable energy, which is essential and non-polluting.

Have we ever thought we could generate electricity with our footsteps?

Walking is the most common activity in day to day life. When a person walks, he

loses energy to the road surface in the form of impact, vibration, sound etc., due

to the transfer of his weight on to the road surface, through foot falls on the

ground during every step. This energy can be tapped and converted in the

usable form such as in electrical form . Walking is a widespread practice every

day. A person transfers energy through impact or vibration to the road surface.

This energy can be converted through electrical energy by subsequent

conversion of mechanical energy. Whenever we move on our feet, our kinetic

energy is wasted as heat energy. In this project, we have originated electricity

through the human-powered mechanical energy.

Background of the Study

As we all know that many Filipino’s in our country can’t afford electricity

and others don’t have. So, we decided to create a project called Electricity

Generator tiles project. Electricity is one of the most essential needs of a family.

So how does this project work? It works very simple the foot work of the person

is an untapped natural energy that will power up the tile generator that is

connected to the power plant that gives houses electricity.

It will help us to gain more electricity than using solar power. Using this

kind of renewable energy will give us less expenses at electricity. It will also help

us to burn our fats while walking on these tiles. Cause walking per day reduce

120 calories.
2
The human waste foot energy is being used to produce electricity this

would be a great evolution in electricity generation. The average human can take

3,000 -5,000 steps a day. When we walk then some of energy is wasted in the

form of

vibrations we can convert this energy or vibrations into an electrical

energy using piezo-electric crystals. The use of piezo-electric crystal is to

produce the electric output from surrounding vibrations. These materials have the

ability to absorb mechanical energy from their surroundings, usually ambient

vibration and transform it into electrical energy that can be used to power other

devices. Piezoelectricity refers to the ability of some materials to generate an

electric potential in response to applied pressure. Embedded piezo-electric

crystals provide the ability to convert the human walking energy into the electric

current due to the exerted pressure.

Objectives of the Study

Most of us can’t live without electricity. The researchers decided to conduct

this study to help people in Tanauan City when it comes to electricity.

Specifically, this study also aims to:

1. To design a tile generator through footsteps that harvests energy for the

people of Tanauan City.

2. To lessen the electricity bills of every household;

3. To innovate a new source of electricity that is reliable and efficient.

3
Significance of the Study

The findings on this study will redound to the benefit of society considering

that Electrical Generator Tiles Project plays an important role in science and

technology today. The results of the study will be beneficial to the following:

To the students. The proposed study can help the students to stimulate

their minds and to think of new and innovative ways that can improve our

community.

To the school. The result of the study can help the school in providing and

inculcating creative and innovative thinking towards their students.

To the community. For them not to worry anymore about sudden power

interruptions because the Electrical Generator Tiles Project is safe and reliable.

To the researchers. The outcome of the study will be beneficial to the

neither present researchers or the future researchers. This study may be one of

the basis that a new theory learning will arise.

To the parents. For them to be aware how much they can save on

electricity bills. For them to be able to discover new reliable source of electricity.

To the environment. For the environment to be able to have better

surroundings. The study will be able to provide modernized source of electrical

energy.
To the community. For them not to worry anymore about sudden power

interruptions because the Electrical Generator Tiles Project is safe and reliable.

5
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on designing an innovative way of harvesting electricity

through human footsteps. The study will be conducted only at Tanauan City

Batangas. Through this study, a design of an improved and innovative electricity

tile generator will be provided. This study shows how the electricality bills of

people in Tanauan City will lessen because of the Electricity Tile Generator

through Footsteps.

Definition of Terms

There are terms used in the previous statements that you may not be familiar.

The key terms in the study are given the following operational definitions:

 Atomic Power Plant - The water in the core is heated by nuclear fission

and then pumped into tubes inside a heat exchanger. Those tubes heat a

separate water source to create steam. The steam then turns an electric

generator to produce electricity. The core water cycles back to the reactor

to be reheated and the process is repeated.

 Electricity – It is the flow of electrical power or charge. It is a secondary

energy source which means that we get it from the conversion of other

sources of energy, like coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear power and other

natural sources, which are called primary sources.

 Energy – It is the ability to do work, to make things happen and to cause

changes. Energy cannot be made or destroyed; it can only be changed

into different forms.

6
 Fossil Fuels – These are made from decomposing plants and animals.

These fuels are found in the Earth's crust and contain carbon and

hydrogen, which can be burned for energy. Coal, oil, and natural gas are

examples of fossil fuels.

 Mechanical Energy – It is the energy that is possessed by an object due to

its motion or due to its position.

 Power – It is defined as the ability to act or have influence over others. An

example of power is the strength needed to run five miles.

 Power Plant – It is an industrial facility that generates electricity from

primary energy. Most power plants use one or more generators that

convert mechanical energy into electrical energy in order to supply power

to the electrical grid for society's electrical needs.

 Tiles - A flat or curved piece of fired clay, stone, or concrete used

especially for roofs, floors, or walls and often for ornamental work.

 Waste Material - It is defined as unwanted and unusable materials and is

regarded as a substance which is of no use.

 Piezoelectric – Producing electrical power by putting pressure on

particular types of stones.
