1. What’s a typical morning like in your home?


 Greg O’Neal: Well, I’m pretty busy. I get up early and check my email. I listen to
the radio. I don’t watch TV on weekdays. Then I study.
 Jennifer Lee: Noisy. I try to study, but my brother and sister make a lot of noise.
They don’t care. My sister watches TV and my brother plays games on the
computer.
 Amanda Sanchez: It’s crazy. We get up late, so I eat breakfast in the car. My
husband doesn’t have breakfast—he drives.
 Alex Stern: Well, my wife and I read the newspaper. I have breakfast and my
wife has coffee. We’re pretty quiet. We don’t talk a lot.

The simple present tense


A. The main use of the simple present tense is to express habitual actions or something that
happens all the time or repeatedly, or something that is true in general:
He smokes. Dog barks. Cats drink milk.
B. The simple present tense is often used with adverbs or adverb phrases such as: always,
never, often, sometimes, usually, every week on Mondays, twice a year, etc.:
How often do you wash your hair? We usually go away at weekends.
I watch football match every Sunday it rains in winter.

The Simple Present Tense: Yes/No questions and short answers


In simple present tense yes/no questions, a form of the verb docomes before the subject
with verbs other than be. Use does with he, she, and it. Use do with I, you, we, and they.
In these questions, the main verb always appears in the simple form. The appropriate
form of do appears in short answers.
