HISTORY

Rabong folkdance came from the Ilocos region. The culture of the Ilocanos
is rich and fortunate. Along with Tagalog, Cebuano, and other regional cultures,
they are one of the most influential in the Philippines.

The people of Ilocos Norte are proud of their diverse songs and dances,
which depict their various customs, beliefs, and rituals. The majority of their
traditional songs reflect their personalities, objectives, and jobs. The ethnic
Ilocano culture has been passed down from generation to generation in the
hearts of current Ilocanos.

CLASSIFICATION

Imitative Dances - these dances depict movement of any animals and the things
around us.

COSTUME AND PROPS

Dancers wear any Ilocano costume peasant. Ilocanos are conscious of

putting on the proper outfit for every occasion. This is illustrated in the epic Lam-
ang for when he goes to visit the Lady Cannoyan, he wears a complete attire of
striped pull-on stringed trousers, decorated shirt and brocaded handkerchief.
When Cannoyan entertains her suitor Lam-ang, she is urged by her mother to
change her clothes to look more presentable. The traditional Ilocano dress made
from inabel reflects the admirable qualities of the Ilocana – their aura of quiet
beauty, appealing shyness, and dignity in their manners. They selected colors
expressing their modesty and simplicity. Their typical dress came in a two-piece
ensemble – blouse and skirt. The blouse called “Kimona” is either plain white or
pastel, usually with a cowl neckline. The full-length skirt called “Pandiling” is
cone-shaped with a drawstring around the waist. This is made from hand loom-
woven textiles which has meticulously woven and sewn by hand. The designs
of the weave are inspired by things in nature such as diamonds, milkyway,
shells and stripes or checkered. The dress is worn over a full slip called
“Kamison.” The dress is more elaborately designed. A colorful wrap-around
called “Tapis” is in colors which compliment the pandiling. The tsinelas are
everyday footwear made of leather, while the formal footwear called kutso are
made of beaded felt and leather.

MUSIC

In rabong, the participants sing the lyrics themselves. Most of their native
song express their characteristics, aspiration and occupations. Passed down
from generation to generation. The Ilocanos have a handful of meaningful ethnic
songs. These songs narrate life stories of the native Ilocanos, which are mostly
about courtship, marriage, occupation and life.
