PET SPEAKING PRACTICE – PART 2

WARM UP:
Match the expressions (1-12) with the functions (a-e) below.

1. How about visiting a museum?


2. Do you mean the water park?
3. That’s a great idea.
4. Do you think it’s a good idea to take him to the zoo?

Speaking Part 2
Part 2 of the PET Speaking exam lasts about 2-3 minutes. The examiner will describe a situation to
you and your partner and give you both some visuals. You will have to share your opinions with your
partner about the task and try to make a decision.
Get Ready!
During the discussion in the exam you will need to show you can offer an opinion (I think ...), ask your
partner for his/her opinion (Do you think ... Do you agree that ...) and make suggestions (Why don't we
... What about ...).
Study Tip!
The examiner is not interested in how good your ideas are. He or she will be listening to see how well
you can discuss things with your partner.
When you practise discussions try to show you are interested in what your partner has to say. Use
expressions like this:
That's a good idea.
That's true.
Do you think so?
Practice
Test 1
Test 2. A girl is having her sixteenth birthday party next week. Her friends want to buy her a present,
but they didn’t have much money. Talk together about the different presents they could give her and
say which would be best. Here is a picture with some ideas to help you.
Test 3. A ten-year-old boy is visiting you next weekend and you want to take him out for the day.
Look at the picture of the boy and some of the places you might take him to. Make a suggestion for the
boy to choose the most suitable place for him. Here is a picture with some ideas to help you.
Test 4. You are going on a camping trip in the mountains with some friends. Look at the picture, there
are some things you could take with you. Decide together which of the things you will take. Here is a
picture with some ideas to help you.
Test 5. A group of students is having a party to celebrate the end of the school year. Each student has
to bring some food. Talk together about the different types of food the students could bring and say
which would be best for a class party. Here is a picture with some ideas to help you.
