What is It

Discussion of Activity 1

A phrase is a group of words that form a part of a sentence. It may

contain a noun or verb, but not both.

Examples:
• the little kitten (noun phrase)
• may be going away (verb phrase)
• in our garden (prepositional phrase)

Creating a noun phrase

- just describe a noun
- nouns disease an infectious disease
workers our dedicated health workers
Creating verb phrase
- just add an auxiliary verb (auxiliary) was + reading (main verb) =
was reading to the main verb (auxiliary)
- just add a preposition (verb) get + up (preposition) = get up
to the verb (verb) look + out (preposition) = look out

4
Creating prepositional phrase
- just add a noun or pronoun (which is called object) to the preposition
along the avenue (noun avenue is the object of the preposition)
from her (pronoun)

A clause is a clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb.

Here are two types of clauses:

1. Independent Clause/Main Clause - expresses a complete thought and

can stand by itself as a complete sentence.

2. Dependent Clause/Subordinate Clause – although it has a subject and
verb, it cannot stand by itself as a complete sentence. It can only be a part of
a sentence.

Michelle asked to be excused from the activity is a clause, having a

subject Michelle) and a verb (asked) and expressing a complete thought,

As such, it is an independent clause.

5. The boy stood on the burning deck.

A dependent clause also called as subordinate clause, a dependent clause is

introduced by a dependent word (subordinating conjunction). See the following list.

after even though so that whatever which

although ever since than when whichever why
as how that whenever while whatever
as if if though where who what
so (that) because in order that unless whereas whom
even if before since until wherever
whose
