The document discusses the parts of seeds, the process of germination, and plant growth. It explains that seeds have a seed coat, embryo, and stored food. Germination involves the seed absorbing water, the root growing down and stem up, shoots emerging above ground, and leaves beginning photosynthesis. Germination requires water, warmth, and air but not light for most seeds. For growth, plants need light, water, air, and warmth to perform photosynthesis to produce sugars and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water.

SCIENCE 5 – Note #2 Semester I/ 2021 – 2022

Theme : Chapter 2 – Investigating Plant Growth
1. Parts of the seed
Seed coat covers and protects the seed
Embryo grows into a young plant
Seed leaves/ food store stores the food for the
baby plant/ embryo.
2. Germination The development of seeds into young plant is germination.
The stages of germination are
1. The seed absorb water and swell 2. The root grow downward to absorb water and mineral salt 3. The stem grow upwards 4. The shoot grows above the ground 5. The leaves of seedling are starting to make food. Seed needs water, warmth and air to germinate. Most seeds do not need light to germinate.
3. Plant Growth Plants need light, water, air and warmth to grow well
Plants can make their own food in a process called photosynthesis.
During photosynthesis, the plants use light energy, carbon dioxide and water to make food (in the form of sugar) and produce oxygen.
