PROBLEM
Jan is a freshmen student nurse enrolled in an online setting. As part of developing his
assessment skills, he has been constantly checking up on his family members’ blood pressure
to monitor the risk of hypertension. With this practice, he was able to observe that there has
seemed to be a relationship between the two variables− weight and blood pressure. The table
below presents the record of the blood pressure with the corresponding weight taken from his
family members. Find out the correlation coefficient and determine if the two

OBJECTIVES
This correlational study aims to determine whether a person’s weight poses a risk for
hypertension which is detrimental to a person’s health. More specifically, this study delves:

PROCEDURE
The data will be gathered through quantitative data collection method where the data
gathered is in numerical form and can be precisely measured. To elicit accurate data, Jan will
ensured that such factors that affect the blood pressure reading will be prevented by
conducting a pre-assessment prior to taking the blood pressure. Thereafter, the participants
will be weighed by utilizing a digital weighing scale to determine their corresponding weight
accurately. The data will then be organized by presenting it in a tabular form and arranging
the independent variable from lowest to highest to gain a clearer picture on the interplay of
CLASSIFYING DATA
The data gathered which is the blood pressure and weight can be considered as a ratio scale
for it possesses a zero point or character of origin and it is also quantitative in nature which is
measurable and in numerical form. Measuring of quality also does not exist in this type
however it allows comparing of intervals or differences of two points. This type of data also
provides the most detailed information to be able to calculate accurately the correlation
coefficient. Moreover, from the two variables that were gathered, the person’s weight will be
denoted as the independent variable for it can stand alone and isn't changed by the other
variables that will be measured. While the person’s blood pressure will be classified as the
STATISTICAL TOOL
1. To graph the data values for accurate linear association, scatter plot will be used.
2. To find the correlation coefficient of the variables, Pearson correlation will be used.
3. To measure the strength of the relationship between the two variables, correlation

lowest to highest value of the gathered weight and corresponding blood pressure.

This scatter plot displays a diagram that shows the relationship between two
numerical variables. Each member of the data set is plotted as a point. The graph displays
that the data is in perfect straight line with a positive slope which can be inferred as a strong
positive correlation. This signifies that as the independent variable (weight) increases the

Based on the result from Figure 2, which is 0.99, it can be interpreted from Table 3
that there is a strong positive correlation between a person’s weight and the corresponding
blood pressure. This signifies that as the independent variable (weight) increases, the
dependent variable (blood pressure) tend to also increase. This can be associated from the
study of Song (2014), which states that the hemodynamic changes related to obesity are
been suggested that the BP control mechanism by diuresis and natriuresis is shifted toward
In summary, this study showed that there is a strong correlation of the person’s
weight with the corresponding blood pressure. This suggests that people should be more
cautious with their respective diet since it poses a great risk to hypertension.
