Defense Cheat Sheet

The document summarizes an assessment of an internship course offered by a college of accountancy. It describes how the researchers ensured their data was reliable and how they defined key terms and variables in their study. Descriptive and comparative quantitative research methods were used to understand differences between audit and non-audit work and different accounting sectors. The researchers used stratified random sampling and Cronbach's alpha to test their survey instrument for reliability and validity. Recommendations include better preparing students for internships and improving communication between the college and industry partners. The study provides significance by helping students, the college, and industry partners evaluate the internship program and identify areas for improvement.

TITLE: AN ASSESSMENT OF THE INITIAL OFFERING OF THE INTERNSHIP COURSE

BY THE UST-AMV COLLEGE OF ACCOUNTANCY

1. How did you know that your data is reliable and sufficient when in fact the
responses gathered exceeded from where the sample size has been calculated? /
Power Analysis
● The computed sample sizes were based on the list of students and the respective
firms that each of them worked in. However, the number of respondents gathered
actually exceeded the initial computation as seen in tables 1 and 2. These figures
were then run through a power analysis which resulted in a power of 97.8% with 256
degrees of freedom. This indicates that the responses we gathered were more than
enough to test our hypotheses.

2. Definition of terms is missing.

● We consulted our research adviser about it, and she recommended that we remove
the definitions of terms in our paper.

3. Why descriptive-comparative quantitative research?

● Descriptive research since we used descriptive statistics such as mean and standard
deviation. Also, comparative research since we utilized t-test to know if there are
significant differences between the audit and non-audit, and commerce and industry
and public practice of accountancy.

4. Explain the Conceptual Framework

● We identified the independent variables as the preparedness of the interns to
undergo internship and their expectations, as well as their perception of an ideal
internship term. These were then the determinants of the extent of development and
ultimately, the benefits that they have derived from the course. Also in order to
satisfy our hypothesis (i.e. to test the significant difference between work nature and
accounting sector), we divided the respondents by nature of work (i.e. audit and
non-audit) and by accounting sector (i.e. public practice & commerce and industry),
with the problems encountered as the moderating variable.

5. Why stratified random sampling?

● Stratified random sampling was used because it is a method that involves the
division of a population into smaller sub-groups. In this case, our respondents were
split into the audit and non-audit strata.

6. Cronbach’s alpha is for what?

● Cronbach’s alpha is used to test the internal consistency or reliability of the likert
scale questions. We used Cronbach's alpha from the pilot testing up to the data
gathering. Some items were removed because they were lower than the 0.70
threshold.

7. Evidence of reliability and validity of the instrument

● Reliability - The questions were lifted from various other studies, as well as the
Internship Form 4 used last semester, but was modified to avoid ambiguity. Also, the
research instrument went through a pilot test on twenty respondents, after which the
internal consistency was checked using Cronbach’s Alpha.
● Validity - Upon construction and before the pilot testing, the instrument was
submitted for validation with three evaluators, to which they commented on certain
items that needed rephrasing or deletion.

8. Recommendations
● Students
○ Better prior preparation for the internship is recommended especially on the
accounting and business competencies as seen on tables 3 and 4, for the
students only answered with slight agreement which indicates that they still
have room for improvement.
● College
○ Conduct an initial internship orientation for the students and teach them how
to produce outputs in different formats such as audit notes, auditor’s reports,
BIR forms, and the like.
○ Communicate with the industry partners better with regards to the needed
evaluation forms.
● Industry Partners
○ Push better communication with the College regarding the forms that need to
be accomplished.
● Future Researchers
○ Eliminate the disparities in the optimal length of the internship through further
study of the subject matter.

9. What is the significance of your research?

● Students
○ The internship program, as part of the students’ Initial Professional
Development, plays a crucial role in their employability and level of
confidence as they find their workplaces after passing the licensure
examination. The results of this study will therefore be of significant help to
their professional growth by providing them with a clear picture of the skills
and knowledge that they will need to possess and those that they will learn
further before and after getting exposed to the program.
● College
○ This study will also be of great benefit to the College in determining its
readiness to deliver their internship course as part of their curriculum, and in
identifying possible weak points that can still be improved upon and employed
in the future.
● Industry Partners
○ Finally, the extra labor capacity and the opportunity to test potential future
employees are definitely of help to the organizations that have partnered up
with the College. These benefits, however, also come with costs that may put
a burden on them. Through this study, the industry partners will also be able
to assess the skills and competencies of the student interns that they will be
taking in, identify gaps based on the industry’s requirements, and work in
collaboration with the College to address and minimize such disparities, if
any, so that the graduates will be work-ready prior to their actual practice of
the profession.

10. What is the relevance of the theory in your study?

● The work-readiness concept for internship implementation, the input-environment-output
model for internship program processes (how the theories students learned in class can
be applied, how they can be incorporated, and how the discovered knowledge can be
used for future purposes), the AICPA core competency framework for demonstrating
competencies that students may use, and the international education standards for
assessing the development of competencies during the internship.

11. Explain the variables of your study.

● The independent variables of the study are the preparedness of the interns to
undergo internship and their expectations, as well as their perception of an ideal
internship term, while the dependent variables of the study are the extent of
development and the benefits that they have derived from the course. We also
identified the problems encountered by the interns as the moderating variable, since
its presence may alter the perception of the respondents on the overall quality of
their internship experience.

12. How did you come up with your hypotheses?

● We came up with our hypotheses by looking at the gaps in the related literature. We
were then able to develop the specific questions that were needed for further study.

13. Conclusion
● To sum it up, the quality of the internship program offered by the College to their BS
Accountancy students is satisfactory based on the responses of the latter . Their
expectations from the faculty and industry partners were met and the listed benefits
from the internship were actually attained. It is also necessary to note, however, that
the current program offered by the College is still subject to minor improvements in
certain areas previously stated. Such improvements are also suggested due to the
fact that this is the first time the College had to restructure their internship program to
tailor fit the work-from-home setup.
