Ideology and concept of Dilli Haat

Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) has promoted music all over
Delhi by taking initiative. A site with large residential audience , located in a part of the Delhi having
few places to go out to, This project stands like a rhythmic heart beat (haat beat) of its surrounding ,
providing platform to the artisans to perform and sell their artworks directly on a mainstream platform
(without indulging middleman). To make this Haat , a functionally viable program , theme ‘MUSIC’
was finalised , catering to the need of space dedicated to hold and showcase musical concerts , sales
and exhibition.

But the design expression doesn’t really reflect the core idea to be MUSIC either in the form of form
and function though some sales, exhibition and concert spaces for music are provided. It was clarified
that this project is a music-oriented space but it was never intended to carry music in the design
language.

As Delhi already has 2 dilli haats, this new haat was thought to be progressive. Respecting the
conventional cultural aspects and progression with respect to contemporary times, in concept and
construction.

Dilli Haat Janakpuri breaks all the notion of conventional craft bazar in terms of both form and
function.

Techniques used to achieve the concept, style and aesthetic expression

As the other two haats have a vocabulary of brickwork, material palette of Dilli Haat Janakpuri has
planned to be a blend of conventional and modern forms. Red Agra stone, Kota stone, slate, local
Delhi quartz stone masonry on facades.
Bamboo is used to clad 8m high funnel shaped structures, provides shading, sculptures for street
furniture. Local stones and plants are used with contemporary materials like steel and tensile
canopies.

Design program

AUDITORIUM -An indoor, well-equipped, 800- capacity auditorium for formal concerts. It also
forms an amphitheatre on top that can hold an audience of 820 people.

AMPHITHEATRE - An informal 800- capacity open-air amphitheatre. The green and paved
amphitheatre instantly reduces the huge mass of the auditorium and at the same time helps retain the
green cover, helping in heat control.

EXPOSISTION HALL - A multipurpose, multi-scaled exposition hall for exhibitions and seminars
is proposed. These halls are three linear vaults of ascending widths in plan.

BAMBOO BASKETS - A set of four baskets houses a music museum, a music store and music
workshop space along with tourism offices and cafes.

CRAFT BAZAAR - Formal, informal and open shop spaces are created to bring in the requirement
of contemporary ideas of craft bazaars into this haat. Outdoor shops with roofing canopies and craft
shops to hold artisans’ workshops are integral to the Dilli haat theme. Air-conditioned shops are also
provided to make it a more viable shopping experience. 100 craft shops circular in plan, are arranged
in clusters of 5-6 each forming a bazaar, built in the most conventional natural stone masonry,
covered with tensile canopies. The clusters are connected with small green patches and paved allies.

FOOD COURT - An independent fine dining with an extended banquet facility is created to grow
the business plan of this haat. The food court houses 48 stalls from different places and celebrate the
taste of India. A large, air-conditioned food court extends into shaded courtyards.

CHILDREN PLAY AREA - There is also a children’s play area in a small green patch.

Vendors rotate every two weeks according to changing themes such as a handicraft, textiles,
Rajasthani goods. Door open daily from 10 am to 9 pm with Rs. 20 entry charges.

• Built up 65 % of total area.
• Free-flowing open spaces bind various activities on two levels.
• The main pedestrian and vehicular entries are from a busy street.
• There is a separate service entry and a couple of special entry points.
• Open pedestrian ramp leads to the terrace lined by canopy shops.
• The central plaza leads to the auditorium and the craft shops cluster.
• The craft shop clusters are located at the rear end of the haat to enable the visitor to walk
through the entire haat.
• The four 8 m high towers are placed along the site.

MOVEMENT (CIRCULATION) -

• From the entrance to the end of the complex, circulation is entirely pedestrian.
• Ramps and steps are provided, roof top access is also given, minimising the distance to reach
the craft shops.
• The front view from the entrance is punctuated by veranda and it blocks view of activities and
functions of formal shops.
• Due to absence of glimpses and markers, the large entrance piazza remains dull and
uninviting as it fails to envisage the craftsmen as a prime soul of the project. As crafts shops
are placed in the isolated rear pocket of the project.
