Developmental and Social Factors: By: Teresita L. Caballero Educ 1 Sunday 7am-10am

Developmental and social factors greatly influence learning. Learning is most effective when a student's physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development is considered. Poor school, home, and community environments can negatively impact cognitive and social development. Social interaction also influences learning, as learning occurs through collaboration and communication with others. Positive relationships and learning environments provide stability and trust, increasing self-respect and participation.

Developmental

and Social
Factors

Developmental
Influences on Learning
As individuals develop, there are different
opportunities and constraints for learning.

Learning is most effective when differential

development within and across physical,
intellectual, emotional and social domains is
taken into account.

Materials for learning should be appropriate

for developmetal level.
Over emphasis one type of developmental readiness (e.g. reading) may prevent
learners from demonstrating their capabilities in other areas.
Poor schooling, home, culture and community factors affect cognitive, emotional,
social development of learners as well as how they interpret life experiences.
Parent involvement in schooling, quality of 2-way communication between adult
and children affect also these areas.
Teachers must be aware and understand developmental differences among
learners.
Social Influences to Learning
Learning is influenced by social interaction, interpersonal relations
and communication with others
As well as collaborate with others
Learning setting must respect diversity , encourage flexibility of
thinking and social competence
Quality personal relationship provides stability, trust and caring and increase
learner’s sense of belonging, self-respect and self-acceptance, and provide
positive climate for learning
Family influences also offset negative beliefs on competence in certain
subject, high levels of test anxiety, negative sex role expectations and undue
pressure to perform well
Positive learning climates helps learners share ideas and participate in the
learning process
Social influence is the change in
behavior that one person causes
in another, intentionally or
unintentionally, as a result of the
way the changed person
perceives themselves in
relationship to the influencer,
other people and society in
general.

Three areas of social influence

are conformity, compliance and
obedience.
The social environment
influences learning by creating a
language environment and an
experience environment which
stimulate the mind to grow, and
by systematically rewarding a
child for learning.
Things can be done both to make the
environment more stimulating and to
increase the drive to learn.
Social influence is prevalent in human
societies.
It takes a wide variety of forms, including obedience, conformity,
persuasion, social loafing, social facilitation, deindividuation, observer
effect, bystander effect, and peer pressure.
There are a number of reasons why people
allow social influences to affect their thoughts
and behavior.
One reason is that we often conform to the norms of a group to gain
acceptance of its members. ... Additionally, group conformity enables a
sense of cohesion within a society.
Learning is greatly influenced by our interactions
with significant others and begins immediately at
birth.

Our first and most primary relationship is with our

parents, especially our mothers, and then with our
families.

Our interactions with others involve the basic

human capacities of knowing, loving and willing
and spur growth.

Relating with others helps validate or modify our

view of reality and of ourselves, and helps others
do the same for themselves.
Social interaction with others is also an effective method
for investigating reality and gaining insight and
understanding.

Investigating truth with others helps create greater love,

fellowship, unity, illumination, happiness, awareness,
certainty, awakening and well-being.

Having learners ask one another questions and help each

other find the answers can further and accelerate
learning.

Peers can often explain things to one another in a manner

that can be more easily understood and accepted and in
the process acquire a deeper knowledge themselves.

Children can learn many things in play and social activity.

Teachers can encourage and
create healthy social
environments in their classrooms
and schools where the virtues of
discipline, order, patience,
forbearance, understanding,
detachment, service, compassion,
tolerance, love, kindness,
fellowship, righteousness and
other interpersonal skills are
taught.
To improve the social climate, we can
teach human relations skills, conflict
resolution and consultation as ways of
solving problems and dealing with
differences.

As we expand our loyalty and identity to

include all humanity, make and enforce
rules that preserve and enrich the dignity
of all peoples and encourage positive
interaction among people who are different
from one another, we create the social
conditions in which we can flourish.
By creating prejudice-free environments
that do not allow “put-downs” of others’
identities, we encourage all people to
flourish and realize their potentials.

By empathizing with others and helping

build healthy self-concepts without
developing a sense of superiority, we help
develop characters that can improve our
communities and institutions.
We can all follow and promote the golden rule and create positive united
learning communities characterized by safety, stability, trust, caring, self-
respect and a sense of belonging.
As we learn to celebrate the uniqueness of each person, we will encourage
self-acceptance, reflection and flexibility in thinking—all vital factors in
developing a positive social learning climate.
Our social skills involve developing moral competence and perspective
taking using our thinking, feeling and willing capacities.
