Turret
Which version?
The turrets vary mainly in the crew hatches as shown in the photos. The only
turret version that has other differences is the late T55AM which has the
snorkel attached to the front right side and AA MG ammo boxes attached to
the rear right side.
Most T-55s, T-55Ms & Late T-55AMs have this type of commander’s hatch
with a welded collar – however Tamiya does not provide it. The hatch
provided by Tamiya is the following later type with sloped sides:
T-55As & T-55AMs all have this type of commander’s hatch – both
provided in kit.
T-55s have this type of loader’s hatch – this is not provided in the kit
They also must be used with the late driver’s hatch – Part D-40 to be
attached to D-42
Late T-55AMs have this type of loader’s hatch – not provided in kit and
must be scratchbuilt. The commander’s hatch goes back to the early version
of the T-55 & T-55M.
The late T-55AM is also the only turret version with other major changes –
namely the addition of attachments for the AA MG ammo boxes and the
snorkel.
All other turret versions had the same sides with the usual grab handles and
tie-cleats as shown above.
First job is to make the holes in the turret shell according to the version
you want as stated in Step 12 of the instructions.
Second job is to add the distinctive bevel to the lower edge of the turret.
This runs from approximately the rear grab handle to about 3 to 4 mm from
edge of Mantlet. Also adding the vent slot at this stage
Only 3 lifting hooks[A-1] are required for the turret, 2 at front in kit
suggested positions, 1 to the rear in the center. Instructions are wrong for the
Russian T-55.
The tie-cleats[A-18] are correct in the instructions for version A & B – the
Soviet versions. The plastic pieces are thick and could do with replacements
made of0.3 wire and bent to shapeor taken from a metal etch fret.
T 55A NO TIE CLEATS?
Make sure you install the correct aperture frames for the Russian Version –
B-3 & b-4 not the ones for the Polish & Czech versions which are more oval
(B-1 & B-2).
An excellent way to create the double horizontal plate is to sand the centre at
the bottom of the kit supplied plate C-47 and cut out a similarly sized plate
with the required hole.
Early T-55s seem only to have the upper edge marker light C-59 and the
driver’s IR light mounting bracket – Part C-11 attached to the rear of the
turret. (Step 17 of the instructions tell you to attach C-11 on the turret roof)
From Step 13 to 14 the kit instructions tell you to attach only C-59 on the
rear of the turret for Version A - the T-55A, except for part C-11.
Photos show that apart from early T-55s the T-55A did indeed have this
layout – even those reworked and fitted with RMSH tracks.
Other versions of the T-55 show other items attached to the turret rear
provided in the kit as C-7, C6 and C-14 and the instructions tells you to
attach them for version B – the Soviet T-55AM. The kit parts leave much to
be desired and had best be replaced.
