Dog Reproduction
Key Concept: All animals reproduce their own kind. Reproduction is the process of making
more of the same kind.
Dogs reproduce sexually. That means that a male dog and a female dog must be involved. The
male dog has sperm. The female dog has eggs. When it is time to reproduce, the male dog gets
very close to the female dog and puts sperm inside her body. The sperm fertilize the eggs. Once the
eggs are fertilized, they begin growing inside the female dog’s body. The fertilized eggs grow into
baby dogs, called puppies, inside the female dog’s body. The mother dog provides the growing
puppies with everything they need to grow inside her body until it is time for them to be born.
Each parent dog donates genes to their new offspring. The baby dogs have a mixture of the
genes they got from each parent. That means baby dogs look like their parents, but they are not
exactly alike.
Once the puppies have grown enough, they are born. The puppies need
care from the parent dogs for several weeks. The puppies must be given
warmth, milk, food, water, shelter, and protection. Once they are old
enough, their parents will show them how to find food, water, and shelter
on their own.
